Chartbitz:
Wednesday 10 May, 2006
by Andrew Miller
Tool Rules
Tool has the biggest opening sales
week of 2006 as 10,000 Days takes the lead of eight brand
new entries in a very active Albums Chart this week. The
band claims their second #1 album. They outsell Pearl Jam’s
Pearl Jam #2 debut by more than two-to-one, but that takes
nothing away from Eddie and the boys who would easily have
taken top honours in a normal week.
It was 10 years ago
when LA quartet Adam Jones, Maynard James Keenan, Paul
D’Amour, and Danny Carey scored their first chart-topper
Aenima which spent a solitary week in pole position.
It’s
just the fourth Tool album to chart here since their first,
1993’s Undertow. The most recent being 2001’s
Lateralus.
This week’s runners-up and Seattle’s finest,
make another respectable entry in their long line of
charting albums. The most recent being 2004’s #3 Rearview
Mirror: The Greatest Hits and from the same year, the #12
Live At Benaroya Hall. The last Pearl Jam studio set to
chart was 2002’s Riot Act, which also peaked at #2.
In
all, Pearl Jam has had five New Zealand #1 Albums: Vs
(1993), Vitalogy (1994), No Code (1996), Yield (1998) and
Binaural (2000).
Our trans-Tasman neighbour has also
given Tool and Pearl Jam #1 and #2 debuts.
NZ Music
Month Week One
Five guys from West Auckland rack up
the second biggest hit of their career, as the second single
from Blindspott’s forthcoming second album claims highest
new entry honours on the Singles Chart. Drown dives straight
in at #4 just one position lower than their biggest hit to
date Phlex which peaked at #3.
Drown is the group’s
eighth chart hit to date. Their self-titled debut album was
#1 out of the starting gates in late 2002.
It’s a good
week for Kiwi singles. Along with Blindspott, the Mt Raskil
Preservation Society featuring Hollie Smith climb back to #2
with Bathe In The River helped by the fact it is the
most-played Kiwi song on radio this week. Could it be the
first local #1 single of 2006?
Nesian Mystik move If It’s
Cool up to #5 as their sophomore album Freshmen debuts at #8
in a very active chart. It follows the #1 debut of
Polysaturated (2002).
Expect further charting local
albums in the coming month, including Aaradhna’s debut and
former Mutton Bird Don McGlashan’s long anticipated
solo-debut.
Mother’s Day Cometh
If you’d
forgotten this Sunday is Mother’s Day, you probably just
need to glance at the Albums Chart. Italian newcomer
Patruzio Buanne, a recent visitor here, and Englishman
Russell Watson both feature.
Patruzio’s promo tour and
media coverage has translated into sales very effectively,
debuting at #5. Born in Naples and educated in Vienna, he
cites Italian musical standards of the ’40s, ’50s and ’60s
as his influences, being exposed to them in his parent’s
ristorante.
He’s due back here at the end of the month to
appear on TVOne’s Dancing With The Stars.
Meanwhile a
tried and true Mother’s Day favourite, Russell Watson, trots
out a best of - The Voice: The Ultimate Collection is new at
#13 and should take his total New Zealand sales tally past
the 100,000 mark.
On the Compilations list, the
gold-certified I Love Mum double-CD moves up to #6.
The New Singles
#4 Blindspott – Drown
#19 System Of A Down - Lonely Day
Formerly known as
Soil, the LA band of partial Armenian descent, System Of A
Down, hit the NZ Singles Chart for the first time. New at
#19 this week is Lonely Day lifted from their former #1
album Hypnotize.
#30 Shakira featuring Wyclef Jean -
Hips Don’t Lie
First coming to prominence here with her
eight-week #1 Whenever, Wherever in 2001, Colombian
Shakira’s back with Hips Don’t Lie new at #30. She’s joined
by ex-Fugee Wyclef Jean who’s been to #1 three times
himself, twice with the Fugees (Killing Me Softly and No
Woman, No Cry, both in 1996) and once solo (Two Wrongs in
2002).
#32 Gnarls Barkly - Crazy
The first song
to top the UK charts on digital downloads alone and still #1
there for a sixth week. Gnarls Barkly (who could be
Americans Danger Mouse and Goodie Mobs Cee-Lo, although
no-one’s confirming exactly who Gnarls Barkly is) arrive in
our charts at #32. It’s far from the first hit-song of the
same name - American country singer Patsy Cline went Crazy
in the early ’60s and there have been many Crazy’s since.
The Iva Davies-led Aussie group Icehouse peaked at #10 in
1987 with their Crazy, while Brit Seal made it to #8 with
Crazy in 1991. Then there’s Englishman Mark Morrison’s #22
Crazy from 1996, Spaniard Julio Iglesias’s 1994 #13, the
1995 Kiwi #43 take by Past To Present… and heaven forbid we
mention that frog.
The New Albums
#1 Tool - 10,000 Days
#2 Pearl Jam - Pearl Jam
#5 Patruzio Buanne - The Italian
#8 Nesian Mystik – Freshmen
#13 Russell Watson - The Voice: The Ultimate Collection
#18 Snow Patrol - Eyes
Open
Brit band Snow Patrol debut at #1 in their homeland
this week with Eyes Open. Not quite so prominent here
(entering at #18) but a great start for a band yet to really
break territories outside the UK.
#36 Gotan Project
- Lunatico
French-based electronic act Gotan Project
present their sophomore studio album Lunatico new at #36.
The album was named after tango hero Carols Gardel's
champion racehorse of the 1930s and was recorded in Buenos
Aires and Paris. The trio’s debut La Revancha Del Tango came
out late 2001.
#38 Rihanna - A Girl Like
You
Seventeen-year-old Rihanna follows her #1 single Pon
De Replay and last year’s debut album Music Of The Sun with
her sophomore effort A Girl Like You. New at #38, it
features this week’s US and Australian #1 single SOS (Rescue
Me), currently #36 here and #4 on the RadioScope100.
