Featured painting ultimate example of Affordable Art Trust
A painting to be featured at tomorrow night’s launch for the 2006 New Zealand Affordable Art Show is the ultimate
example of what the New Zealand Affordable Art Trust is all about - supporting emerging artists, Executive Director
Carla Russell says.
Mr Knap was an original exhibitor at the first Affordable Art Show in 2004 when his pieces were priced between
$2000-$4000. However, the Wellington artist has just sold a piece at a local exhibition for $39,500.
“He is a great example of the aims and ideals of the Trust at work, and his success means the Trust and Show is
succeeding in fostering new talent as well as opening up art to the masses.”
Ms Russell says the artwork, titled “A Trek through Wellington” sold within the first five minutes of the gallery
exhibition opening and means that Mr Knap’s artistic career is now in full flight.
“That’s a fantastic result for us to see one of the inaugural exhibitors doing so well only two years after the
Affordable Art Show began.”
She says the Trust is also very grateful to the new owner of the painting who has kindly loaned it to us for the launch
tomorrow night.”
Tomorrow night’s event, to be held at the Museum Hotel, will introduce the Trust members, Show team and staff to invited
guests, sponsors and Friends of the Trust while also affording the group an opportunity to tour the Museum Hotel and its
new apartment complex.
Ms Russell says hotel owner Chris Parkin, a Trustee, is an avid art collector and has an extensive collection, much of
which will be on display at the launch tomorrow night. The collection includes pieces from Robin White, Fran Dibble,
Paul Vincent, Colin McCahon, Lynne Sandri and a new collection of mosaic mirrors from Jane Brimblecombe.
“There will also be a selection of pieces from this year’s show available for viewing at the event. The pieces are from
emerging Wellington artists Dean Proudfoot, Crispin Korschen, Kate McLaren, Mikel Taylor and Veronica Green as well as
Cambridge artist Jos Coufreur and Hamish Mulvaney from Nelson.”
About 170 invited guests are expected for the launch to be held between 6-8pm at the Museum Hotel.
