Applications for SPARC Hillary Expedition grants

Media Release 05 April 2006

Applications for SPARC Hillary Expedition grants now open

Applications are now open to adventurous Kiwis looking for financial assistance with their expeditions through SPARC’s (Sport and Recreation New Zealand’s) revamped Hillary Expedition initiative.

Up to six groups of inspiring adventurers will be given the opportunity to apply for a grant of between $15,000 and $30,000.

SPARC’s General Manager of Participation, Deb Hurdle, said that it was SPARC’s role to ensure that New Zealanders were given every opportunity to achieve at all levels in sport and recreation.

“The Hillary Expedition will help us meet that goal by encouraging and supporting Kiwis in their explorations of the outdoor world,” said Hurdle.

The outdoors is an excellent environment for people to learn and grow. It cultivates that part of the Kiwi character to which most New Zealanders identify. It would be tragic for us to lose that unique quality.”

Hurdle said that SPARC was thrilled to have Sir Edmund Hillary as the namesake for the initiative, originally launched in 2002.

“Hillary’s courageous and proud spirit epitomises what the quintessential Kiwi stands for. He’s highly respected by all New Zealanders,” said Hurdle.

The original scheme only consisted of one grant to one group of adventurers. In 2006, it has been opened up so more adventurers can reap the benefits.

To qualify for a grant, an expedition might include, but is not limited to, any one or combination of the following activities: tramping, mountaineering, rock climbing, cross-country skiing, white water and/or sea kayaking, mountain biking, and sailing. The expeditions can take place in New Zealand or overseas.

Applications close on Friday 23rd June.
