struggle.
International Women's Day Forum
Wednesday
March 8th, Trades Hall Bar (147 Great North Road Auckland)
from 7pm onwards
Speakers, discussion, live music and bar.
This year’s International Women’s Day forum looks at the life and work of women laundry workers, cleaners, kitchen workers and caregivers. Traditionally considered ‘woman’s work’it is not surprising that these jobs are the lowest paid and most undervalued jobs in our society.
Jill Ovens, lifelong activist and unionist, will talk about the further impact on women as these jobs are increasingly contracted out and casualised.
A panel of speakers will be profiling the campaigns running this year to support women in these industries and their work in the community:
Supersizemypay: for the abolition of youth rates and to increase the minimum wage.
SFWU Healthy Hospitals campaign: a mass campaign to win back living wages and a fair deal for ALL service workers in public hospitals.
Shakiti Asian Women’s Centre: on their work to support young Asian women in the community organising against violence and oppression.
The SFWU commercial cleaners campaign - the campaign to combat contracting out! Organising cleaning workers to recognise the value and essential contribution of cleaning workers with better pay and conditions.
Also - Live music from NZ Idol Star, and ex-KFC worker Rosita Vai, the Romanova’s and the Stewart Sisters.
