The dream begins for young jazz composer
Ten-piece band Jasmine Lovell-Smith and The Night Dreamers make their debut in Fringe 06 with a concert of new works by Jasmine Lovell-Smith. A graduate of the Massey University Conservatorium of Music jazz programme, Jasmine has been playing tenor saxophone around Wellington for the last three years.
In creating The Night Dreamers, Jasmine has combined some of Wellington’s most creative musicians to form a diverse sound palette including vocals, woodwinds, brass, and jazz rhythm section. “I am honoured to have such a great band working for me”, enthuses Jasmine, “They all bring such a range of experience and the combined sound is something I’m really excited about.”
The performance includes both Jazz and Latin tinged instrumental pieces and atmospheric settings of modern poems, which feature the stunning vocal talents of Hannah Griffin. Hannah is well known in Wellington for her performances with the Kevin Clark Trio, Zirkus, Shaken Not Stirred and her own quartet. Another featured soloist is sax and clarinet player Nils Olsen, best known for his work with C.L Bob.
All the instrumentalists will get a chance to shine - “The music is quite carefully orchestrated, but I’ve also left a lot of space for improvisation since I have so great soloists in the band”, says Jasmine. “This concert isn’t just jazz for jazz fans - it’s a chance for everyone to experience some new music played by a unique ensemble.”
Music for an Elastic Jazz Band is on for two nights, Feb 16-17 8 p.m. at Happy (basement level, corner of Vivian and Tory Streets).
