Award winning Open Book Productions are back!

Award-winning Open Book Productions returns to the Fringe Festival with their 10th devised work. Set against the spectacular backdrop of Wellington’s City to Sea Bridge, it’s a free outdoor event featuring shadow puppetry, dark lullabies, and original live music by Simon Bowden of C.L. Bob and Aaron Prior.

“The show lies somewhere between reality and dream,” says performer Emma Gallagher. “We were so intrigued by the terrifying lyrics in all these sweet sounding lullabies that we wanted to explore the dark side of a child’s imagination.”

The story follows ‘Pink Johnny’ on a surreal journey after his mother tips him down the bath drain. Based loosely on the myth of Narcissus and Echo, the characters were formed in collaboration with professional psychoanalysts. “It was fascinating to compare fictional characters with real-life accounts of Narcissism,” says Emma. “It offered insight into what the characters might do next.”

Open Book Productions (Best Theatre 2000; Best Outdoor 2001; Special Award 2003) was formed in 1999 by Victoria University of Wellington graduates of the theatre programme.
