After two successful Auckland seasons, Emporium comes to a busy street near you!
Emporium is a live music and contemporary dance event performed in shop windows. Be prepared to see anything in this fast-moving half hour show. A day at the fashion races, a living beauty counter, performers become products and a snake charmer turns checkout-chic. Audiences have described the show as “fun,” “captivating” and “brave and refreshing.”
Auckland dancers Julia Milsom (Raewyn Hill’s Angels with Dirty Feet, Malia Jonstons’s Miniatures) and Julie Van Renen (Claire Luiten’s Its All About Me) delight the audience with a saucy, slapstick approach to contemporary dance. The performers sell themselves up, out and short in a surreal and provocative exploration of consumerism.
Emporium is accompanied by the dulcet tones, toys and tricks of Wellington composer, singer and recording artist, Leila Adu. “I saw Julia and Julie dancing at an improv’ festival in Auckand and was really impressed by their spontaneous, even confrontational, dancing. When I told Julia that I wanted to work with her she said, ‘wow, I’ve got your album and I love it. I’m working on this piece about buying and selling….’” Thus, Emporium was born.
Kicking off Fringe 06’s opening nights and suitable for all ages. Watch the whole show or window shop down late night Cuba St and let Emporium grab your attention.
