Eight Months on the Beat – in the Heat

Maori Television delivers a gritty eight months in the life of cops on the beat in one of Australia’s most remote outposts with the launch of KIMBERLEY COPS (Friday February 10 at 10.00 PM).

The four-part documentary series is produced by ex-pat Kiwi film maker Paul Roy for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) and follows the ordinary lives and work of a group of Australian police in extraordinary conditions.

As they contend with lost tourists, crocodiles, boat rescues, sensitive issues with indigenous communities and the realities of living in the outback in the Kimberley region, viewers gain a taste of the mettle required to uphold law and order.

Split into four stories, the first episode Follow The Rocks (Friday February 10 at 10.00 PM) introduces new ‘coppers’ Kim and Shannon Massam. The search for a missing photographer who failed to return to the Aboriginal settlement of Oombugurri ensues. Meanwhile, Charlie Marks and Rex Macintosh have to travel by plane to organize the search over terrain that takes 1.5 hours to drive 11 kilometres, while seeking the co-operation of community elder Darryl Morgan

In The End of the Road (Friday February 17 at 10.00 PM), the series explores everyday police work in the desolate community of Balgo. This episode shows two police in the community who have taken on responsibilities beyond normal policing to look after a dislocated young boy – while braving wet season conditions to find a missing couple.

Rescues play a large part in police work and the third episode – Gone from Diggers (Friday February 24 at 10.00 PM) – covers a long day for the police. Including a search and rescue for two young Welsh tourists, a rollover of a large cattle truck where the cattle have been injured and the removal of a 7ft crocodile from a tourist farm, the day brings a few testing events.

The final episode – Taken by the Tide (Friday March 3 at 10.00 PM) – showcases the Barra Bash or the Wyndham community’s big weekend that attracts fishermen from all over the state to catch the biggest barramundi. The two Aboriginal Liaison Officers, Rex McIntosh and Percy Hunter, keep in touch with the local youth by running a go-kart race meeting. However, there are two further search and rescue incidents to be had and the police need to deal with heat, dangerous tides and an obscene amount of mud in order to taste success.

Eye-opening and hot, don’t miss the premiere of KIMBERLEY COPS on Maori Television on Friday February 10 at 10.00 PM.
