SPARC (Sport and Recreation New Zealand) today corrected an article in the New Zealand Herald which wrongly said that schools would be required to provide one hours physical education a day for their students.
"This is incorrect. The new requirement, announced in October 2004 and effective from this year, is for schools to provide regular quality physical activity which develops movement skills. Schools around the country will be supported to do this through a network of regional advisers" Education Advisor, Cath Clark said.
"Quality physical activity involves developing children's fundamental movement and physical coordination skills so children become confident at and enjoy physical activity. As well as improving a child's health and wellbeing, research suggests that physical activity also enhances brain function, the learning process and a child's academic performance across all curriculum areas."
