Openair Cinema opens with `No 2'
The Openair Cinema at the Viaduct Harbour is coming back for a third season. The temporary movie theatre will operate on
Te Wero Island from 4 - 26 February 2006. The programme consists of 22 different movies - a real festival of cinematic
work around the world - and a New Zealand Premiere: the snowboard documentary `First Descent' will be shown on Friday 24
February, while Toa Fraser's new feature film `No 2' opens the Festival on Saturday 4 February.
The programme is again very broad, consisting of new releases like `King Kong', `The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The
Witch and the Wardrobe', `Cinderella Man', `The Constant Gardener', `The Legend of Zorro' and `Harry Potter & The Goblet Of Fire'. The all time classic `Casablanca' will be shown on Valentines Day, and if you miss that one, the
`love story of the year', `Pride & Prejudice' follows on the 15 February.
There are some outdoor-classics to be seen, like `Riding Giants' - a surfing documentary, which complements `Step into
Liquid'; `Deep Blue' - a gem for all nature lovers with fascinating images of sea life made for the giant screen, and
`Star Wars Episode III - The Return of the Sith' - is there a more appropriate way to see it than under the stars? The
latest Arthouse-hits `The Edukatores', `The Queen of Sheba's Pearls' and the Argentinian Drama, `El Perro' complement
the programme. The Openair Cinema is also very much a social event - where people scream and laugh together: there will
be plenty of that with `Sideways', the Canadian comedy `Seducing Dr. Lewis', `The Wedding Crashers', `Happy Endings' and
the latest French comedy-hit, `Look at Me'.
All seating is uncovered and allocated on a `first come, first served' basis. The flat seats are $12 and grandstand
seats are $16 each. The ticket office and gates open at 7pm from 4 February. Tickets may be purchased online now (no
booking fees): http://www.openair.co.nz or at Tourism Auckland's Princess Wharf Visitor Centre during the day.
The movie itself is just one part of the experience - the environment and scenery of the Viaduct Harbour creates the
atmosphere for a very special event. Moviegoers can enjoy the sunset, food, wine, beer, soft drinks, coffee and ice
cream. No BYO alcohol is allowed. As night falls the giant screen is inflated and an unforgettable movie-going
experience begins. The Viaduct Harbour is the ideal location, close to Britomart and many nearby car parks. It is an
event for Aucklanders and tourists alike.
