Antiques Roadshow Stars Bring Stage Show to NZ

Two of Britain’s most-loved television personalities, Hilary Kay and Paul Atterbury of the BBC’s Antiques Roadshow, head to New Zealand in February with their own quirky, comical and informative stage show, Tales From The Antiques Roadshow - Have You Had it Long, Madam?

Tim Woods Entertainment presents Tales From The Antiques Roadshow at the Concert Chamber, Auckland Town Hall on Sunday February 26 at 2pm.

Hilary and Paul will share a glimpse of the hilarious exploits, dramas and disasters of the show Michael Aspel calls, “one of the most successful stories in British television history”.

A television phenomenon, now in its 29th year, the Antiques Roadshow currently screens in New Zealand on TV One and numbers its worldwide audience in the tens of millions. Part game show, part brains trust, the success of the Antiques Roadshow lies not only in the discoveries which emerge from rumpled newspaper wrappings, carrier bags and battered boxes, but also in the personalities of the owners.

Now, Hilary Kay and Paul Atterbury bring their expertise to New Zealand for a one-off show. In Tales From The Antiques Roadshow - Have You Had It Long, Madam?, Hilary and Paul take the audience behind the scenes for an insider’s look at the Antiques Roadshow, offer their advice on collecting and selling – what’s hot, what’s not and what’s the next big thing – and answer questions from the audience.

Hilary Kay’s obsession with antiques began when she was a child. She joined Sotheby’s in London in 1977 and the following year, when 21, she became Sotheby’s youngest ever auctioneer.

She works on the ‘Miscellaneous’ table on the Antiques Roadshow, and loves the diversity of the objects she sees, from 17th century embroideries up to tinplate robots from the 1960’s.

A self-confessed ‘rock chick’, Hilary conceived and held the world’s first ever auction of rock ‘n’ roll memorabilia in 1981, and wrote the first book on the subject, Rock ‘n’ Collectables.

Paul Atterbury once described the role of an Antiques Roadshow expert as, “part doctor, part priest, someone who can send people away feeling glad they’ve come to the Roadshow, even if their object is quite worthless in commercial terms.”

He has been a graphic designer and publisher, guide book and travel writer, magazine editor, lecturer, exhibition curator at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, and publisher. He has also found the time to write more than 30 books.
