Kiwi Film Fan Launches Rare Poster
Website
Filmpostersdownunder.com is a website dedicated to displaying original movie posters as displayed In New Zealand cinemas. These posters usually came via the USA. Great Britain or Australia. Filmpostersdownunder.com is just up and running and more posters will be added as we catalogue and photograph them. Many posters still have NZ censorship stamps on them condition varies and numbers are limited many of these classic posters go back to the sixties. Some but not all of the posters are available for sale.
Movie posters of yesteryear came mostly in one sheet and day bill size a set of 11x 14 lobby cards 8x10 photos and sometimes three sheet and six sheets were also available. Publicity and press sheets were supplied for local media.
In the 1970’s and 1980’s films only got a very small release with maybe only 10 prints out at any one time. In later years up to 20 prints could be released.
Some movies would only screen in limited release in the main centres and it could be many months before they reached the provincial areas.
New Zealand movies had very limited releases so posters are rare and hard to find. The early Peter Jackson movie posters are getting hard to find because of this limited and short release time span.
As it could be up to 6 months before some titles screened in the provincial towns very few posters would be displayed for that title and when the tins of film arrived at the cinema posters were usually sent in the film tins so these posters were in short supply and well used.
New Zealand censorship meant that some posters would have censorship printed on words blacked out and sometimes even a scene blacked out on the poster. This censorship in some movie posters can be significant, eg content may disturb , in the way it could attract even more interest in a particular movie.
