Amplifier Newsletter #198 - 7 December 2005

Amplifier Newsletter #198 - 7 December 2005

Kia ora , It’s December already?!? Sometimes it feels as though we’ve put the year behind the right speaker stack at a gig and then forgotten to grab it again on the way out. There’s too much niceness in NZ music and not enough time to enjoy it all. Anyway Amplifier.co.nz is going to spread the festive joy like you wouldn’t believe.

From now until mid/early January we’ve got one Big Day Out ticket to give to an Amplifier user each day. Let me say that again; One Big Day Out ticket being given away each day from now until Jan! All you have to do is vote for one of the bands in the Live and Local competition thanks to Jack Daniels Old No. 7.

You can vote once per day and the more times you vote the more times you’re entered. The band that tops the competition will open the 2006 Big Day Out and also get a day at York St Recording Studios. Along the way there will be Jack Daniel’s Old No. 7 spot prizes and at the end of the competition one voter will receive 4 VIP tickets to the Big Day O! ut.

Check out the new releases below and we can’t stress this enough, go and see some live music! We’re stuck in Auckland this week (the Amplifier HQ Holden has blown a head gasket) so we’re going to see Rhombus tomorrow at Studio and Katchafire on Friday night at the Safari Lounge. Hopefully we’ll see you there too.

Ka kite ano.

Album

Tomachi - The Hotel Vermont Sessions The old joke goes, “What do you call a person who hangs around with musicians?” - A Drummer. Tomachi aka Tom Atkinson explodes that myth with his debut solo album 'The Hotel Vermont Sessions'. It's the culmination of several years worth of pent-up musical drive, held in check while he's drummed in a variety of bands such including one million dollars, SJD, Breaks Co-Op, Foghorn, The Roughness & more. Guest musicians include Dam Native, King Kapisi, Godfrey de Grut, Hamish Clarke [Breaks Co-Op] & a plethora of others.

Tracks

The Hot Grits - Formula One Formula One is an old school hard funk song strapped kicking and screaming to a very powerful rocket. Press play and you'll find yourself hurtling through the stratosphere on a fat-ass drum break and pulsating bass. The current Hot Grits lineup consists of no fewer than nine very talented musicians from such varied backgrounds as jazz, hardcore, metal, reggae, hip hop and big band.

Artist

KAPITAL KAPITAL has been Robert Crow's obsessive musical vehicle for over 5 years. In this time he has moved through musical minefields most NZ bands fear to tread. His early musical experimentations owed more to "Stunt Clown" era Headless Chickens than AC/DC. Recently, a hit on 95 BFM "Something Real", a song that stayed at No. 1 for seven weeks.
