Winner of Ellerslie Flower Show Young Designer of the Year Announced
Talented Kiwi garden designers Nick Jones, Jamie Roberts and Rob Bark have won the opportunity of a lifetime as recipient of the Ellerslie Flower Show Young Designer of the Year Award for their gold medal winning Ajar! exhibit in the Design Marquee.
As part of the Award the three designers also received the inaugural Garden Design Travel Scholarship, an Ellerslie Flower Show Trust initiative involving a grant of $8000 to travel overseas to study international landscaping and design.
Jamie Roberts says their exhibit aims to inspire people to form their own opinion on what the design means to them.
“The design is characterised by the physical aspect of a group of doors cut longitudinally, with the cavity within the doors becoming a selection of viewports.
We wanted people to take in the whole picture and create their own stories from the design, so we moved away from the traditional garden design concept of one perspective and worked with a three dimensional perspective instead.”
The Ellerslie Flower Show Trust introduced the new scholarship initiative for 2005 to support and promote the growing landscape design industry and to encourage excellence among New Zealand’s young garden designers.
On their return, Jones, Roberts and Bark will receive an open invitation to participate with a design or exhibition garden at the subsequent Ellerslie Flower Show.
Peter Cox, Ellerslie Flower Show general manager says Ellerslie Flower Show aims to encourage new and emerging talent and proactively foster and promote world class standards in the field.
“As winners of Young Designer of the Year, Nick, Jamie and Rob have been given the opportunity to demonstrate their abilities on the international stage,” says Mr Cox.
A further three cash prizes totalling $6000 have been presented to Victoria University ($4500) and UNITEC ($1500), whose students gained the top three places in the Awards.
Don’t miss the opportunity to view the entrants’ designs in the show’s exciting Design Marquee, themed ‘Fantasy or Reality’!
The Ellerslie Flower Show 2005 promises to be Like Never Before, with innovation, inspiration and floral delights. The Show blooms from 16-20 November at Auckland Botanic Gardens. Tickets can be purchased at any Ticketek outlet, by contacting 09 307 5000 (or your local Ticketek number), via the website www.ticketek.co.nz or at the gate.
