CMNZ: Work of Taranaki inspired artist
17 October 2005
Kiwi musicians perform to the work of Taranaki inspired artist
New Zealand percussion group Double Lateral will premiere two compositions by Kiwi composers John Psathas and Gareth Farr in New Plymouth this month. They will perform at the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery on Saturday 29 and Sunday 30 October.
A special feature of the concerts will be a presentation of work by one of New Zealand’s finest realist artists, Michael Smither. Smither has spent a great deal of time in Taranaki and a selection of the artist’s work will be shown during Double Lateral’s concerts in the form of slides as a backdrop.
Chamber Music New Zealand, who is presenting the concerts, approached the Govett-Brewster Art Galley earlier this year to create a synergy between Double Lateral and a local artist. The gallery suggested Michael Smither as an artist whose work would be representative of the Taranaki district.
These concerts will be the first time CMNZ has presented at the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery.
An exhibition on Michael’s work, titled Michael Smither – The Wonder Year’s is currently on at the Auckland City Art gallery and includes work inspired by his time spent in the Taranaki region.
