STOP PRESS !!!!

Michael Park, Co-driver for Peugeot Team mate Markko Martin suffered fatal injuries while competing on the third and final Leg of Wales Rally GB, round 12 of the FIA World Rally Championship.

Michael, or "Beef" as he was know in rally circles, was a regular competitor in New Zealand's round of the Championship and had been a top level co-driver for a number of year's with various teams including Subaru, Ford and Peugeot.

Michael was a great ambassador for the sport of rallying, and regularly provided advice and assistance to up and coming competitors as well as Event Organisers.

Morrie Chandler, Chairman of Rally New Zealand, said, "this is a tragic event, Michael was a fierce competitor who was at the top of our sport. This is an unfortunate reminder of how dangerous rallying can be."

Michael is survived by his wife and two children.

Rally New Zealand wishes to express our condolences to Michael’s family, friends and colleges.

He will be sadly missed.

Rally New Zealand gains “Pride of Place” on international calendar

A World Rally Championship Calendar leaked from the recent FIA meetings lists New Zealand as the penultimate round of the 2006 World Rally Championship which could well see the 2006 champion crowned in New Zealand

The draft calendar shows the Propecia sponsored New Zealand event as being 9-12 November and is followed by the final round in Wales.

“The November date will be good for the weather conditions and should also work well with the rural community” said Propecia Rally New Zealand Chairman Morrie Chandler.

“It sets the event up as a possible ‘grand finale’ for the 2006 championship as frequently the championship is decided before the final event”

We initially wanted a late May date” said Chandler “but it became quickly apparent that this was going to be logistically difficult and therefore we looked for other opportunities. The draft 2006 calendar places Japan, Australia and then New Zealand in a cluster and therefore becomes very cost effective for international teams” he added

With an increasing international TV audience, estimated at 800 million in 130 countries at the last count and at a time when Europe is at peak TV viewing time due to their winter season New Zealand stands to enjoy an increasing share of the international viewing audience.

Changes ahead for WRC Regulations

The FIA has signalled a desire to make the World Rally Championship cheaper for competitors while at the same time more attractive for new manufacturers and competitors to join the Championship.

As a result the following recommendations are being proposed for the World Motorsport Council to consider in their October meeting:

- A change in the Championship calendar with the Championship starting in August and finishing in May the following year.
The Championship structure would be:
2007 Championship - January to May (8 events)
2008 Championship – August 2007 to May 2008

This has the benefits of avoiding a clash with F1 and should also allow for a greater TV audience as this will effectively be a “European Winter” Championship at which time more people in Europe are generally inside watching TV.

- Proposal to allow non-manufacturer teams to contest the Championship, provided that firstly the manufacturer has registered a “primary” manufacturers team. (ie: Privateers in a 2 car Mitsubishi team could contest the Championship provided that Mitsubishi has firstly registered a Manufacturer Team to contest the Championship)
- Freedom to change drivers within a team except for the No1 driver of the priority one team.
