Comic Genius At City Gallery Wellington
Anyone who’s walked through Civic Square in the past few months couldn’t have helped but notice the bold banners
currently displayed on the front of City Gallery Wellington, announcing the exhibition ‘Small World, Big Town:
Contemporary Art from Te Papa’.
The banners are modelled on the work of leading New Zealand cartoonist Dylan Horrocks, whose graphic novel ‘Hicksville’
was a significant inspiration for the curators who put this exhibition together. Over the coming weeks, City Gallery
Wellington offers comic book enthusiasts of all ages three opportunities to indulge their passion and sharpen their
skills: a school holiday programme for kids aged 5-12; a cartoon workshop with Dylan Horrocks for those 15 and over; and
a talk by Dylan, for everyone!

Monday 3 October – Friday 7 October
City Gallery Wellington’s school holiday programmes give kids a chance to engage with the Gallery’s shows and make their
own artworks in response to what they see.
These holidays, kids will be introduced to the work of cartoonist Dylan Horrocks, who has pages from his graphic novel
‘Hicksville’ included in the current exhibition ‘Small World, Big Town: Contemporary Art from Te Papa’. In the workshop
session, kids will make their own comic screen in response to what they’ve seen and heard.
Monday 3 October: 8-12 year olds
Tuesday 4 October: 5-7 year olds
Wednesday 5 October: 8-12 year olds
Thursday 6 October: 5-7 year olds
Friday 7 October: 8-12 year olds
All sessions are from 10:30am to 1pm.

Award-winning cartoonist Dylan Horrocks takes a cartoon workshop. This is open to aspiring comic strip makers aged 15
years and over.

PLAYING IN THE GARDEN: Imaginary Worlds in Art, Stories and Games. A talk by dylan horrocks

Imaginary worlds are everywhere these days. From Hogwarts to The Sims, people are spending more and more time in places
that don't exist. Leading New Zealand cartoonist Dylan Horrocks takes a look at the importance of ‘world building’ in
novels, comics, art and games – including Henry Darger, Dungeons & Dragons, the Bronte sisters and Star Wars – and asks what happens when stories become worlds.
