Ms Downunder 2005 crowned!

Jaime Arnold, who grew up in Titahi Bay, has been crowned Ms Downunder as part of UniQ Victoria’s GlamSlam 2005 festival.

This was the first time Ms Downunder had been run since 2003 when Bindie Redden won amid much controversy that she was “too femme”. To stop a similar controversy happening this year, it was decided that the audience would be issued voting slips.

Over 600 people packed Pound Niteclub to watch the eight contestants battle it out with Jaime winning 30% more votes than second place-getter.

Paul Brown, UniQ Victoria President says “We’re really pleased with Ms Downunder, and in fact the whole GlamSlam 2005 festival. It’s done remarkably well and we can’t wait to see what next year brings! Actually the Sinner and Saints party did so well we’re planning another one soon to really beef up the queer events calendar in Wellington”

On top of Ms Downunder, GlamSlam events included the Glammies community awards ceremony, where Georgina Beyer took away the Lifetime Achievement Award, the Sinner or Saint dance party, GAP Celebrity Debate (featuring Mayor Kerry Prendergast) and a raft of activities and workshops at Victoria University including DRAG101 with Hamilton’s Miss Gloriousole.
