Student Garden Design Competition Not To Be Sneezed At

Ellerslie Flower Show and Flixonase announced today that secondary school students across New Zealand will compete in the Flixonase Low Allergy Garden Competition, presented by the Ellerslie Flower Show. The winning low-allergy garden design, judged by rising garden design star Xanthe White, will be brought to life for the Auckland-based Ellerslie Flower Show in November.

The competition sees the Ellerslie Flower Show partner with Flixonase in a fusion of the award-winning 2004 Flixonase Low Allergy Garden exhibit and the well-established Ellerslie Flower Show Annual Secondary Schools Design Competition. The grand prize is the construction and exhibition of the winning garden at the show - a value of $20,000.

The winning design will be built by a professional landscape company and include all of the lighting features, plants and layout as designed by the students.

Thirty per cent of New Zealanders suffer from allergies, often as a result of airborne pollens.

³We want to let allergy sufferers know that low-allergy garden alternatives are available and that it doesn¹t mean having to compromise on garden colour or style,² says Erla Rapsch, Managing Director of GlaxoSmithKline. ³The competition aims to let the thousands of New Zealand allergy sufferers know that it is possible for them to enjoy their gardens.²

Damian Cooper, Ellerslie Flower Show Exhibition Manager believes the Flixonase Low Allergy Garden Competition presented by the Ellerslie Flower Show opens students minds to landscape design as a legitimate career choice, as well as educating them about practical solutions to managing allergies.

³One of the aims of the Ellerslie Flower Show is to encourage education and career development in horticulture and design. The competition provides a platform to showcase students¹ abilities at the most well-renowned gardening event in New Zealand.²

Xanthe White was the creator of the 2004 Flixonase Low Allergy Garden at the Ellerslie Flower Show. The garden won the Gold Award for Outdoor Exhibition Garden, Runner-up in the Supreme Award for best in show, Supreme Award for Lighting Excellence, Supreme Award for Design Excellence and the Landscape Industry Association of New Zealand Inc. Award for Professional Excellence.
