NZ On Air congratulates NZ Screen Awards winners

NZ On Air is delighted with the number of awards received by NZ On Air-funded programmes at last night’s screen awards and warmly congratulates all the winners, says acting chief executive Bernard Duncan.

The first annual New Zealand Screen Awards were held in Auckland last night and NZ On Air funded programmes won 19 of the 22 awards in the television section.

Drama series Insiders’ Guide to Happiness produced by the Gibson Group was the most lauded, winning seven awards including Best Drama Series and Performance by an Actor.

Two awards each went to teen drama, Being Eve, animated comedy bro’ Town, historic adventure series Explorers and the documentary on dancer Douglas Wright, Haunting Douglas.

Celebrity travel series Intrepid Journeys and satirical comedy Serial Killers received one award each, as did the investigation into the Scott Watson murder case, Murder on the Blade, and the documentary tracing the evolution of New Zealand animation, From Len Lye to Gollum.

All the winners should feel proud that they have played an important role in both highlighting and shaping New Zealand’s identity and, equally as vital, in entertaining people, Mr Duncan said.

“Seeing ourselves on screen helps us to connect as a society, and to know who we are as a nation. The screen awards gives further acknowledgement to the importance of broadcasting’s role in Kiwi culture.”
