The Russians are coming!

“In this part of the world, no one conducts the Russian composers more tellingly than Edvard Tchivzhel, who was back on the podium… urging the Philharmonia to great things…” [NZ Herald, 2001]

“Over the years, Edvard Tchivzhel has been responsible for some of the Auckland Philharmonia’s finest performances.” (NZ Herald, 2003.) On Thursday 11 August this great conductor, who is celebrated around the world for both live performances and recordings, is back to conduct an all-Russian programme.

Following graduation from the Leningrad Conservatoire, where he studied in the prestigious conducting classes of Arvid Jansons, Edvard Tchivzhel worked as Assistant Conductor to the legendary Yevgeni Mravinsky with the St Petersburg Philharmonic. This led to a career in which he has achieved international status, conducting leading orchestras worldwide and performing with great artists such as Yo-Yo Ma, Gidon Kremer, Vladimir Spivakov, Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg, Emmanuel Ax, Andre Watts, Janos Starker, Olga Kern, Gil Shaham, Joshua Bell and Bella Davidovich.

Edvard Tchivzhel is joined for his upcoming Auckland Philharmonia concert by fellow Russian Nikolai Demidenko, a pianist of distinction, a giant of the keyboard who plays with electrifying virtuosity, powerful insight and remarkable fluency. Demidenko performs a work that is perfect for his soulful interpretation and effortless technique – Rachmaninov’s Fourth Piano Concerto.

The concert programme also features Rimsky-Korsakov’s colourful musical tale of Tsar Saltan; Kikimora, a neat little character piece by Liadov; and Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite, full of Russian folk influences and melodies that have now become classic.
