Extra-musical inspiration informs this fascinating line-up presented by first-time guest conductor Hannu Lintu. The sound colours of Schoenberg's influential Five Orchestral Pieces have parallels with Expressionist painting, while Bernstein's Serenade, "a series of related statements in praise of love", was inspired by Plato' s Symposium, and the final orchestral work of the ever-Romantic Rachmaninov confirms his lifelong fascination with rich ecclesiastical chants.
