Lions fans will get to prove themselves in Undie 500
It’s being dubbed the real Test, with Lions and All Black supporters being asked to don nothing more than their red or black underpants for Auckland’s own ‘Undie 50’.
The approximately 500 metre running race will take place at 12.15pm on Thursday along the length of Grandstand Road in the Auckland Domain (just below the main Park Road entrance of the Domain). Participants and onlookers will be asked to gather at the old Domain Grandstand at noon, accessible from both Park and Carlton Gore Roads.
The event has been organised and sponsored by the Newmarket Business Association with prizes including a $1000 voucher to a Newmarket store of the winner’s choice and several spot prizes.
“We thought it was important the Lions supporters got a real appreciation of a New Zealand winter and we wanted to give them one last opportunity to prove themselves against some All Black supporters,” said Cameron Brewer, General Manager of the Newmarket Business Association.
“Given they’ve just come out of a balmy northern hemisphere summer, we can’t wait to see the Lions supporters’ beautifully tanned and toned bodies. It’s undoubtedly going to be an exhibition of some of the most athletic physiques in Britain and Ireland,”
“The image of hundreds of scantily-clad Lions and All Black supporters running through Auckland’s most historic and beautiful park will make naturalists and exhibitionists around the world green with envy. It’s going to be hilarious,” said Mr Brewer.
Mr Brewer said despite his last minute organisation of the Undie 500, the Auckland City Council event facilitations team has been very supportive and helpful.
