Wellington student Karlo Margetic has won the Original Composition section of the New Zealand Community Trust Chamber Music Contest for the second year running.

Eighteen entries were received from young composers all over New Zealand. Prominent New Zealand composer Eve de Castro-Robinson adjudicated the entries and said that Karlo?s piece was the most outstanding work in the competition.

"I was surprised and thrilled to see a secondary student working at such a level of musical sophistication", said Eve. "There is great sensitivity and dedicated knowledge unusual in one so young."

Karlo was advised of his win last night (Sunday 19 June) by National Organiser Megan Mannering. Megan said she could hear screams of delight coming from members of Karlo?s family in the background. "I?m really excited to go to the National Final again", says Karlo. "The whole experience; the positive encouragement as a composer and performer and the social aspect is all great fun!"

The scores were judged on an anonymous basis and Eve was not aware that she had awarded the prize to last year's winner. She did say she knew was dealing with a very good clarinet player.

"It's a joy to see such marvellous clarinet writing", said Eve. "I hope this composer will go on to university study because he has a great future!"

Karlo?s winning composition is titled ŒChamber Concertino? for clarinet, two violins, viola, cello and piano. It was performed by The Senza Misura Ensemble from Hutt Valley High School at the Wellington District Contest (Sunday 19 June). Karlo will receive the SOUNZ prize of $500 for his win.

Karlo?s entry will be performed alongside competing groups at the National Final in Auckland, Saturday 6 August.

The New Zealand Community Trust Chamber Music Contest is New Zealand?s only national chamber music competition for young musicians and composers.

In presenting the New Zealand Community Trust Chamber Music Contest, Chamber Music New Zealand acknowledges and funding from the New Zealand Community Trust, Creative New Zealand and SOUNZ (Centre for New Zealand Music).

About the New Zealand Community Trust Chamber Music Contest

The New Zealand Community Trust Chamber Music Contest is the longest running youth music competition in New Zealand and is the only national chamber music competition for young musicians and composers in the country.

A record number of groups entered this year?s New Zealand Community Trust Chamber Music Contest, attracting 562 entries from Whangarei to Southland received nationwide, involving 2115 students. District Contests were held in fourteen centres nationwide throughout June, adjudicated by musicians Gretchen Dunsmore, Kenneth Young, Iaan and Sarah Wilson and Catherine McKay.

The contest recently celebrated its 40th birthday this year with a soirée at Government House in Wellington in May.
