The stats:

Auckland: 150 teams at the start … 120 teams finished on time
Wellington: 72 teams at the start … 57 teams finished on time
Christchurch: 27 teams at the start … 24 teams finished on time
Dunedin: 24 teams at the start … 18 teams finished on time

48Hours is now officially NZ's largest film competition.

The competition started in 2003 with 44 teams in Auckland only. The following year it grew to 80 teams in Auckland and 45 teams in Wellington. Now, in 2005, the competition is truly a national competition with Christchurch and Dunedin joining the chaos.

Last weekend, 273 teams across NZ had just 48 hours to create an entire short film - write, shoot and edit - or die trying.

The character was Bodil DeRezny; an animal lover, the prop was a banana and the line of dialogue was "Please don't do that"

Over the course of the weekend there was a team that lost a pet dog, one team distracted a driver who crashed through a fence and into another car, one team had the Police arrive and stop a fake fight, the Waipa Delta Dinner Boat floated down the Waikato River with diners who saw a fake dead body floating by, an editors cigar caused an evacuation, and there were many more tragic tales.

There were films from kids as young as 14 years old all the way through to an elderly couple. There were first timers, there were repeat offenders, there were pro teams and then there.... well .. lets just say a couple were "interesting".

" we asked a helicopter pilot if he'd mind flying us around, he said okay lets do it!"

The films will be screened in cinemas over the next couple of weeks and judged by a hugely appreciative audience. The top 12 from each city will be chosen by a panel of judges to compete in their city's final. Finally, the best short from each city competes in a live TV National Final.

Hundreds of teams compete. Hundreds of thousands watch.
