Lecture Series
Bloody Gallipoli

Wednesday 4, 11 & 18 May

The Museum Institute and Auckland University present a three-part lecture series to complement the /Bloody Gallipoli/ exhibition. The first lecture is on Wednesday 4 May, 'Photographic representation of Gallipoli'. $15 per lecture, or $35 for the series. Museum Institute members and concessions $12 per lecture, or $30 for the series. Call 0800 864 266 to book. The /Bloody Gallipoli/ exhibition is on display until 22 May.

Ernst Plischke in New Zealand

From the City Gallery Wellington comes/ Ernst/ /Plischke in New Zealand/, an exhibition that* *celebrates the New Zealand work of renowned Austrian architect Ernst Plischke. The exhibition brings attention to Plischke’s architectural legacy in New Zealand and particularly Wellington, where the best examples of his mature work exist. The exhibition is one of three temporary exhibitions on display to celebrate the New Zealand house.

Heart of Art Festival

7 - 23 May

The Heart of Art Festival brings in artists and performers from all over the country, for the enjoyment of residents, workers and visitors to Parnell and Newmarket. Auckland Museum is supporting this year's festival with a lineup of activities and events including a film screening, sculpture symposium and kids' activities.

Getting Involved
Membership Events

Auckland Museum, Auckland Museum Institute and the Museum Circle hold monthly events, lectures and activities for Museum members, and for the general public. May's lectures from the Auckland Museum Institute include a look at cosmology with 'Star birth and death: crucible of life' and a delve into the ocean with the Fleming Lecture - 'Science and conservation - management of New Zealand's endangered dolphin'. Both of these lectures are open to members and the general public.

Our special 'Members' Monday' on Monday 30 May is for members only, and takes a look behind-the-scenes of the recent BioBlitz 2005, with John Early - Entomology Curator and Ewen Cameron - Botany Curator.

Matariki Festival

7 June - 6 July

Each year around June, the stars of Matariki and Puanga signal the end of one year in Aotearoa and the start of the next. Traditionally Maori have recognised the rise of Matariki as a time to celebrate and prepare for our indigenous New Year.

Celebrate Matariki with a series of special events at Auckland Museum. Experience New Zealand native foods in a unique food event. Take part in the Matariki colouring competition and go in the draw to win a Matariki wall-chart from Reed Publishing. Check out the Matariki facts and decorations on display in the Stevenson Discovery Centre, Treasures & Tales, listen to traditional Maori music, watch a special film screening and much more.

Getting Involved
Auckland Museum's Bugler

Many thanks to Auckland War Memorial Museum's bugler, William Gunson, for yet another fine performance this Anzac Day.

William Gunson is great-grandson of Museum founder, Sir James Gunson. He is currently completing his law degree in Auckland. William is a musician of wide talent, he plays the piano, cathedral organ, trumpet and bugle! He is also a member of Indra Hughes religious musical choir, 'Musica Sacra'.

William says he has immensely enjoyed playing the bugle and trumpet on many occasions at Auckland War Memorial Museum. He has played on Anzac Day for the past eight years, performing popular wartime tunes from both world wars such as 'Pack up your troubles', 'White cliffs of Dover' and 'We'll meet again'. He is also bugler for the Armistice Day parade every year.

Huakina Nga Tatau - Opening the Doors

The Changing Face of Museums in New Zealand

1 - 3 June

This three-day symposium looks at the changing face of museums in New Zealand and brings together directors, curators, conservators, academics and scholars from museums and art galleries around the country.

The symposium will include expert speakers of Maori descent from around Aotearoa who have been involved in the museum and heritage sectors. Includes a key note address from international visiting scholar and Founding Director of the National Museum of the American Indian, W. Richard West Jr.
