Young says ‘no’ to television role
The director of the Qantas Media Awards, Barry Young, says he will not be accepting an offer from the New Zealand Television Broadcasters’ Council to assist with the running of a new television awards planned for November.
“They made a generous financial offer for me to assist with the journalism categories of the new awards but I have decided I do not wish to be involved. The new awards are not just about journalism and are therefore driven by different dynamics which I believe are best understood and developed by people within the television industry. I wish them well with what will be an exciting new project,” said Young.
“The Qantas Print Awards will not be affected and I will continue to operate these recognising excellence in New Zealand print journalism. They will be presented this year in Wellington on May 13 and then alternatively in Auckland and Wellington in successive years. The final Qantas Broadcasting Awards, which include radio journalism as well as television, will be presented in Auckland on May 20.
“The New Zealand Television Broadcasters’ Council has said radio journalism will not be included in their new awards as they have been in the current Qantas Broadcasting Awards. Talks are now taking place between myself and others concerning the future of awards for radio journalists,” Young explained.
