Maori TV live music show COAST line up

Maori Television’s live music show COAST is proud to showcase the first live music special of the year with a Roots Reggae Special being broadcast on Thursday April 28 at 9.00 PM. Broadcast LIVE from Maori Television’s studios located at 9-15 Davis Crescent, Newmarket the first special of the year pulls together a stellar line up of authentic reggae bands staying true to their roots in Aotearoa. The show is FREE AND OPEN to the public every Thursday at 9.00 PM.

The line up for Thursday April 28 is :

CHE FU AND THE KRATES

Back after a long hiatus in the recording studio, CHE FU and his support crew THE KRATES make a long-awaited appearance in the Coast studios. Although a performer who needs no introductions, this Maori-Niuean natural born superstar is getting ready to drop his new album as a follow up to the wildly successful first albums, 2B Spacific and Navigator. COAST has scored a coup with claiming one of his first public performances in a looooong time.

TIGILAU NESS

See any resemblances? Tigilau is Che’s Dad and a Niuean poet who oozes life from his words. The front man for conscious roots group Unity Pacific, Tigilau brings a deep Rastafarian faith and a background in political activism through music to the COAST studios. A father and son tag-team perhaps? Stay tuned to find out!

THE TWELVE TRIBES OF ISRAEL

The Twelve Tribes of Israel have been synonymous with organic music since its inception in New Zealand in the early 1980s. Tigilau is coincidentally an original member of the group – an international organisation with worldwide affiliations pertaining to the Rastafarian faith. COAST is proud to showcase a rare appearance from the multi-member group in celebration of peace and goodwill.

THE MIDNIGHTS

This upcoming six-member original roots group from Grey Lynn (Auckland) embodies a philosophy of eclecticism brought together by a love of original sound. The Midnights produce a uniquely sweet sound, heavy in lyric and harmonies, and are coming in for a special performance on COAST after a whirlwind summer of performing at major events - including Reggae Soundsplash, AKO5 and university orientations the breadth and length of the North Island.

HOUSE OF SHEM

Hailing from Wanganui, this family band is fronted by 18-year-old Te Omeka Perkins and his brothers. The group has a sound reminiscent of the glory days of reggae when bands such as Herbs and Dread Beat & Blood ruled New Zealand’s air waves. Incidentally – the Perkins boys are sons of Carl Perkins – one of the original founding members of Herbs. More family connections and more reason to tune into COAST’s Roots Reggae Special.

JAH’LICIOUS

Jah’licious starts with the founder, Ms Zoey Scott – AKA the formidable Blaque Reign. The band is an exciting mix of reggae and punk rock influences, with other members being Steve Jellard on guitars, Scotty Simpson on bass and Aneka Beatty on backing vocals. Jah’licious make a welcome return to the COAST studios after last year’s appearance to add more ragga flavour to the first music special of the year.
