Elgar is appreciated today for the intensity of his unspoken yearnings which found expression in his more personal works such as the nostalgic Sea Pictures and 13th Variation of the Enigma. In between are the Italian kaleidoscope of In the South and the Romance for Bassoon with NZSO Principal Bassoonist Lawrence Preman Tilson.

Mahler's beautiful Late Romantic song/symphony, based on settings of six Chinese poems, expresses the poignancy of life's brevity but also man's joy in earth's beauty and spring's return. In contrast is the mesmerising sound palette of Tan Dun, acclaimed composer of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Scored for large orchestra, Death and Fire is based on the paintings of Paul Klee and is a major highlight in the year's programme.

A new work by leading New Zealand composer Eve de Castro-Robinson features NZSO Principal Cellist David Chickering and leads to Richard Strauss's classical Oboe Concerto performed by Sydney Symphony's Principal Oboist Diana Doherty as the virtuosic soloist. What better way to finish than with Sibelius's popular Second Symphony famous for its stirring 'big tune' ending?

New Zealand Symphony Orchestra European Tour

The New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Music Director James Judd will make a historic tour in August to the world-famous 2005 BBC Proms and one of Europe's most sought-after concert halls - the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. This will be followed by a tour to the World Expo in Aichi, Japan representing New Zealand. This is the largest tour outside New Zealand that the NZSO has ever undertaken, the first ever appearance by a New Zealand orchestra at the prestigious BBC Proms and will feature two of New Zealand's most prominent music ambassadors, Dame Kiri te Kanawa and Jonathan Lemalu.
