Community Radio Hamilton: Anything but straight

Community Radio Hamilton (1206AM)

Anything but straight

Hamilton’s only “queer” radio show debuts this week when Community Radio Hamilton debuts “The Fairly Queer Hour” at 5pm on Friday, 1 April.

The weekly one hour slot is dedicated to sharing information for all gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender or otherwise not “straight” radio listeners, and is hosted by first-time announcers Megan Moffet and Josiah Hickey.

Megan brings a wealth of experience to the show, drawing on her role as the Waikato Student Union’s GLBT (Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender) Representative. She describes herself as a “‘lip-gloss Lesbian’ - a far cry from the stereotype that many people have of the radical feminists of the 70s, but just as determined to make sure sexual orientation does not result in discrimination or abuse”.

Josiah is a first-year Waikato Uni student and heads Askew, the campus club supporting GLBT students.

“We’re going to tackle a specific issue every week. Gay parenting, civil unions, homophobia, and a whole lot more – it’s not all going to be rhetoric of course, expect loads of fantastic music and a healthy dose of subversive humour,” says Josiah.

Community Radio Hamilton’s general manager Phil Grey explains radio shows related to gender and sexuality issues are a high priority for Access radio stations. “This show is long overdue, much needed, and a very welcome addition to our increasingly diverse and interesting schedule”, he says.
