The Best Show In Town This Easter

Need ideas on how to keep the family entertained these Easter holidays?

Head to the best show in town this Easter, the Royal Easter Show on from 24-29 March at the Auckland Showgrounds.

New Zealand’s largest and most varied family festival, this year’s Royal Easter Show has a stellar line-up with Shrek 2 and the Powerpuff Girls headlining the event.

In New Zealand for the first time and exclusive to the Royal Easter Show, Shrek, Donkey, Puss In Boots and all the other characters from Shrek 2 are live on stage five times a day.

The Powerpuff Girls, a super-powered trio who star on Sky TV’s The Cartoon Network, are also live on stage three times a day, exclusive to the Easter Show.

New this year is the Great Northern Sheeplechase, a tongue-in-cheek sheep race promising to be great entertainment for all.

A sheepish take on horse racing, six sheep will race each other for the finish line, while the MC calls the race. The sheep – Black Beauty, Lamborghini, Cardigan Bay, Well Fleeced, Yellow Pullover and Red Ram – each have their own racing colours and jockey – a miniature toy horse.

Animal lovers can rest easy, the contestants are all pet sheep and only run because they know there is food at the finish line.

New Zealand’s top shearers, including New Zealand and world champion David Fagan, are expected to compete in Easter Friday’s seniors and speed shearing events. Back after a five-year absence, the three star showjumping promises to be exciting viewing with teams from France, Holland, Germany and New Zealand competing battling it out in the Nations Cup on Saturday 26 March.

The Weber Brothers Circus is back with a new show, Circus Eggstreme, on four to six times a day in the 1,000-seat Big Top. And just confirmed and sure to please the younger ones, SpongeBob SquarePants will be onsite each day to meet and greet fans.

Entry is only $30 for a family of five, $15 an adult, $5 a child and free for under-2 years. All shows and attractions, excluding the carnival rides, are included in the entry price at no extra cost.

And with all attractions under cover except for the carnival, it’s a great day out even if the weather is poor. So don’t let bad weather put you off!

Parking is available at Alexandra Park or the Puriri Drive Football Fields for $5. Stagecoach will also have buses going to the venue.
