Festival Of Colour Street Concert Announced

The Southern Lakes Festival of Colour today (7 March) announced top New Zealand band, Goldenhorse, will perform a free street concert as part of the Festival on Saturday 30 April.

Taking place at the crossroads of Dunmore and Helwick Streets in the centre of Wanaka, the free concert will allow thousands of fans and festival-goers to enjoy music from the band¹s new album, Out of the Moon, as well as the record-breaking Riverhead album.

Festival director Philip Tremewan said it was a wonderful opportunity for the Southern Lakes to have a band of Goldenhorse¹s calibre at the festival.

³Goldenhorse attracts sell-out performances wherever they go with their powerful mix of swing, funky bass lines and all out rock,² he said. ³The festival¹s delighted to be able to bring one of New Zealand¹s greatest bands to Wanaka so everyone can enjoy their explosive and mesmerising live performance free of charge ­ it¹s going to be a lot of fun.²

It is over two years and 50,000 copies since Goldenhorse¹s debut album, Riverhead, was launched. New album, Out Of The Moon, due out at the end of March, mixes in plenty of variety among its tracks without losing sight of what makes Goldenhorse so special to begin with. ³What the band is now is more defined than it was when we recorded Riverhead,² explained guitarist/vocalist Geoff Maddock, ³We know a lot more about what we do. We¹re a better band now, that¹s one thing that makes this record more satisfying to me. I think we¹re going in a good direction.²

On Out Of The Moon, Kirsten Morelle¹s singing is more sweetly intoxicating than ever before, while the band demonstrate an equally fine, intuitive grasp of atmosphere, texture and melody. And, without compromising any soulfulness or sensitivity, Goldenhorse have undoubtedly beefed up their approach this time around. ³The record is more guitar-orientated,² said Maddock, ³it¹s more direct, it¹s gruntier, a bit more hard out. And it¹s also produced better, it¹s somehow tighter and more cohesive.²

Goldenhorse are the grand finale to an afternoon of free entertainment on Saturday 30 April. Also included is one of New Zealand¹s oldest and most respected brass bands, the Ascot Park Hotel Brass Band that dates back to 1867, together with the Invercargill Highland Pipe Band and an outdoor dance performance by Footnote Dance Company.
