Lima –Pacific Arts, 2 - 5 February 2005,

Pacific Underground presents Christchurch’s annual Pacific Arts Festival, now in its fifth year (lima: five). A celebration of the diversity of New Zealand’s Maori and Pacific art, it is the only event of its kind in the South Island.

Lima will include exhibitions, film screenings, concerts, weaving, Pasifika jewellery, music and writing workshops. Demonstrations of weaving in a pavilion that will house weavers from all over the Pacific, and the showing of Canterbury Museum’s collection of Siapo (Tapa cloth) by Roger Fyfe, are new features of the Lima. Also new to the festival will be the Lima Bus Tour, a bus full of Pacific performers appearing at Hornby, Northlands, The Palms and Eastgate Malls. Festival favourite Family Day at the Arts Centre brings food, entertainment and family fun with the official closing held in the evening at the “Fia Fia (celebration)” with Pacific dance. Lima’s diverse programme offers something for everyone, including performing opportunities for professional artists.

This year’s line-up features Samoan Hip Hop artist ‘Feestyle’, a seminar by Bro’ Town creators The Naked Samoans, Maori master carver, ta moko artist and painter Riki Manuel, Samoan Tattoist Peter Suluape, Dunedin Cook Island Dance troupe “Kiaorana Cultural Group”, and Laughing Samoans show “The Small Samoan Wedding”, and returning to this festival for the third time are international guests Sunga.

Venues: Arts Centre of Christchurch, Cathedral Square, Te Toi Mana Maori Gallery, Canterbury Museum, Christchurch Art Gallery, Dux de Lux
