non-crafts sites
In January 1996 the first big Market was held on the park around the fountain in Mission Bay. This event has been run in conjunction with the big Regatta out in Auckland Harbour. There is always much interest in the Regatta, and hundreds of people come down to the Waterfront to view the wonderful sight of all the sailing yachts. The Market enhances the day with the many different arts and crafts and provides a greater interest for the whole family.
The craft sites are set up in rows and cover the entire length of the park (Selwyn Reserve).
Each year this Market has steadily grown in the number of people wanting to sell their crafts and many of the craftspeople travel from outside of Auckland. There is a real cross section of work on offer, so there is something for everyone.
A popular site in January 2004 was work by Victoria Cutelli from Tauranga. Victoria sculptures graceful figures from Oamaru stone - some are freestanding and some are framed. (www.victoriacutellis.com). This is just one example of the quality of work this annual Market attracts.
Succulents grown by Linda Wilson were another popular
site. Linda is a Landcape Designer and grows many of the
plants that she uses in her work.
She says that
“succulents are very popular for their easy to grow
properties and their structural look compliments the latest
housing designs”.
Other sites include honey from Remuera bees, mosaics, delicious jams and chutneys, lots of original paintings and garden art and sculpture, handcrafted knives from Kaitiaia, many different types of jewellery including work in Greenstone from a Whakatane artisan, clothing, aromatherapy products and much more.
