Summer Music School a must for musicians

Summer Music School a must for musicians

The Auckland Philharmonia’s annual Summer Music School, sponsored by the Sentinel Community Trust and now in its sixth year, is an eagerly anticipated event on the musical calendar.

Running from Tuesday 18 to Sunday 23 January at St Cuthbert’s College in Epsom, over 65 musicians from all over New Zealand, plus two from Australia, will participate in the Summer Music School, an intensive orchestral training retreat in which musicians of all levels and ages develop their skills by working with professional musicians from the Auckland Philharmonia.

Musicians who are eligible to work at a very advanced level and experience a professional orchestral environment are admitted to the Premier Fellowship Orchestra which is made up largely of musicians from the Auckland Philharmonia. Keen amateur musicians and advanced students are admitted to the Festival Orchestra, in which every section of the orchestra is augmented with Auckland Philharmonia musicians. Australian Luke Dollman conducts the orchestras, with violinist Eugene Lee (winner of the 2004 New Zealand Young Musician of the Year Competition) as guest soloist.

As well as participating in orchestra rehearsals, masterclasses, sectionals, coaching and workshops, musicians have the option of being involved in chamber music ensembles.

Open to the general public, the Grande Finale Concert at 11am on Sunday 23 January, features both the Premier Fellowship and Festival Orchestras as well as selected chamber music ensembles – included in the programme are works by Debussy, Sibelius, Mussorgsky, Borodin, Honegger, Rossini, Tchaikovsky and Gareth Farr. During the interval there is a barbeque for the audience and musicians. Adult tickets $30 (includes concert and barbeque). For bookings phone the Auckland Philharmonia on 0800-PHILHARMONIA (0800-744 542).

The Auckland Philharmonia gratefully acknowledge the Sentinel Community Trust for its sponsorship of the Summer Music School. The Auckland Philharmonia receives major funding from Creative New Zealand and a major grant from Auckland City.
