Auckland Landmark Turns 75
Sunday 28 November marks 75 years since the war memorial building which houses the Auckland Museum was opened to the public. The grand neoclassical building was constructed with subscriptions raised by Aucklanders to remember loved ones lost in World War 1 and has become one of the most beloved structures in New Zealand.
To celebrate the occasion the museum will be holding an anniversary ceremony at 9am conducted by dignitaries including the Governor General, Dame Silvia Cartwright and the Right Reverend Richard Randerson, Dean of the Holy Trinity, Auckland. The Mayor of Auckland, Mr Dick Hubbard and the Mayor of Waitakere, Mr Bob Harvey will also be in attendance.
There will also be the launch of Richard Wolfe’s ‘A Noble Prospect’; a book dedicated to the history of the Auckland War Memorial Museum building. Visitors can trace the records of relatives who fought in both world wars in the Armoury war memorial archives. And a special film screening of vignettes from 1914-1971, courtesy of the New Zealand Film Archive, celebrate a true monument to the people of Auckland.
