Hotere, McCahon paintings among special works in Ferner Galleries’ spring offerings
Some of New Zealand’s finest modern works by top artists including Ralph Hotere and Colin McCahon, are included in the
Ferner Galleries’ new Spring catalogue.
Ferner Galleries' catalogue features the finest contemporary and traditional paintings by leading New Zealand artists.
Published by one of NZ’s leading art dealers, 34 of the 99 works have been sold already such is the demand in New
Zealand and from overseas, Ferner Galleries managing director Helene Phillips said today. ``Still available in the
catalogue are major works by artists such as Colin McCahon, Bill Hammond, Ralph Hotere, Philip Clairmont and the late
Pat Hanly,’’ she said.
A rare and exceptional 1921 painting by Rhona Haszard, Victoria Avenue, Wanganui, is included in the catalogue but is
currently included in a national touring exhibition of artists work shortly to show at the Auckland Art Gallery.
Haszard was one of New Zealand’s most controversial pioneering modernists who was a fellow student on Ngaio Marsh and
Evelyn Page at Canterbury College School of art.
Other notable New Zealand women artists in the catalogue are Elise Mourant, Dorothy Kate Richmond, Adele Younghusband,
Maud Sherwood, Dame Louise Henderson, Robin White and Gretchen Albrecht.
McCahon’s 1956 French Bay painting from his days at Titirangi in west Auckland is part of a series, one of which is
held in the collection at Te Papa Tongarewa Museum in Wellington.
One of Hotere’s paintings in the catalogue, Nineteen Eighty Four Polaris, is politically controversial as it refers to
a visit to NZ waters by US nuclear powered ship Polaris.
The Hotere painting suggests a danger to the New Zealand environment posed by the nuclear powered ship
