Maori Sports Awards Unveils New-Look Website
A one-stop website for news and information about the Maori Sports Awards – HYPERLINK "http://www.maorisportsawards.co.nz/"www.maorisportsawards.co.nz – has been unveiled by the trust set up to run the annual event.
The executive director of Te Tohu Taakaro o Aotearoa, Richard (Dick) Garratt, says the new-look website includes nomination forms for the 10 categories as well as sports and educational scholarships, updates on regional-based Iwi Sports Awards from around the country, a list of past winners and a photo gallery.
The first inductees into the Maori Sports Hall of Fame – Te Whare Matapuna o Te Ao Maori – are also featured on the website and users can download a form to nominate athletes and administrators that have achieved sporting success at a national and international level in the past.
‘Te Rongo-Tu-Taua a Maui’ – honouring male Maori champions from the past – is the theme of this year’s black-tie awards ceremony which is being held at the Auckland Showgrounds on Saturday, December 4. An annual Tamariki Sports and Cultural Day will again be hosted by Te Kura Kaupapa Maori a Rohe o Mangere at House Park Reserve in Mangere Central on Thursday, December 2.
“Te Tohu Taakaro o Aotearoa was founded by Albie Pryor – one of New Zealand’s most powerful men, both on and off the field, who had the guts, vision and passion to create this magnificent treasure,” Dick Garratt says. “Albie would be proud that the window of opportunity he created for Maori youth, athletes and organisations is in the state it is in today.”
