Kiwis And Aussies Battle It Out For Barbecue Supremacy
The search is on for the ultimate display of Kiwi ingenuity, New Zealand's most unique barbecue.
Officially launching this week, the BeefEater Search for New Zealand's Most Unique Barbecue runs for four months, with entries closing on December 31.
Twelve regional winners will be selected from across the country and of those, one ultimate barbecue creation will be chosen to represent New Zealand in a trans-Tasman challenge, where New Zealand's best will take on Australia's best for a grand holiday prize.
Spokesperson for BeefEater in New Zealand Roly Kerridge says Kiwis pride themselves on both their ingenuity and barbecuing prowess, and the BeefEater Search for New Zealand's Most Unique Barbecue will put both to the test.
"Whether it's built from old car parts or junk from the shed, judges are looking for real creativity and ingenuity. And while they don't need to be intricately designed, they should be functional and capable of cooking a few steaks or sausages.
"As a barbecue loving nation we're expecting to see some wild and wacky inventions from New Zealanders. The competition is also a chance to prove ourselves as better than the Aussies when it comes to backyard ingenuity," says Mr Kerridge.
Whilst it's a first in New Zealand, the BeefEater unique barbecue challenge has run in Australia for several years, attracting hundreds of hilarious creations, including an old transformed lawnmower and a barbecue built under the bonnet of a 1960s EJ Holden. Washing machines, wheelbarrows, beer kegs, 44 gallon drums and a caravan sink have all featured in past Australian entries.
"We're looking forward to finding our most inventive, DIY Kiwis and pitching their creations against Australia's best."
The designer of New Zealand's most unique barbecue will win an outdoor package including a top of the range BeefEater Signature Plus Barbecue and an outdoor furniture setting, as well as going on to compete for the trans-Tasman grand prize of a holiday for two in Australia's tropical North Queensland.
The twelve regional winners from across New Zealand will each receive a BeefEater BeefMates 17 piece Chef Kit and all entrants receive a BeefEater Barbecue Cookbook and bottle opener.
