NZ MUSICIANS' SUPPORT FOR A FUTURE FREE FROM BREAST CANCER
"It is my privilege to be involved in the 'Triumph' project and my hope is that it succeeds in raising both awareness about this devastating illness, and funds for the fight against it." - Brooke Fraser
Some of New Zealand's most popular musicians are joining the battle against breast cancer, the country's leading cancer killer of women.
The "TRIUMPH" compilation CD - released nationwide by Sony Music today [eds: Monday, September 13] - features 19 hit songs from top Kiwi bands and solo artists, including Brooke Fraser's number one hit 'Lifeline' and 'Golden Dawn' from Goldenhorse.
TRIUMPH will raise funds for the Breast Cancer Research Trust to be used for research into breast cancer in New Zealand women.
Several artists featured have strong personal reasons for getting involved in this project.
The band Goldenhorse did not hesitate when asked to provide a song for the album. All supporting artists echoed this reaction.
"We realise breast cancer affects every New Zealander in some way. We are fully supportive of this cause," Goldenhorse band members said.
Greg Johnson says: "I've lost a number of friends to cancer but I also know a lot who've fought it successfully. I think my song, 'Hold Tight', kind of says everything I'd want to say."
Che Fu exhorts family members to "get behind the females in their lives and support them", while Te Awanui Reeder from Nesian Mystik quotes in Maori "He aha te mea nui i tenei ao? He tangata, he tangata, he tangata", meaning "What is the most important thing in the world? The people, the people, the people".
Proceeds from the album will go to the Breast Cancer Research Trust (www.bcrt.co.nz). Mimi Lloyd, chair of the Trust, says: "Every person who buys a copy of 'Triumph', is enabling the Trust to take the fight to a new level, so we can all look forward to a future free from breast cancer."
New Zealand has one of the highest rates of breast cancer in the developed world and it is the leading cause of cancer death among New Zealand women. More than 2000 women are diagnosed and 600 women die each year from the disease.
Michael Glading, managing director of Sony Music the company behind TRIUMPH, is heartened by the manner in which the music industry has jumped on board to ensure the project is a success.
"There has been phenomenal support from the artists, record labels, retailers and media. The words of the artists themselves succinctly describe the level of emotional involvement everyone feels with the album," says Glading. "We hope the music-buying public will show their support by buying a copy and enjoying the great music too."
