City Mission And Telecom Serve Up Longest Lunch

THE WELLINGTON CITY MISSION AND TELECOM SERVE UP NEW ZEALAND’S LONGEST LUNCH

The Wellington City Mission and Telecom have joined forces to celebrate the Mission’s 100 year anniversary with a food extravaganza – Wellington’s Longest Lunch.

A brainchild of famous foodie and restaurant critic Father Des Britten, the lunch will help raise funds for a proportion of the $2.2 million needed to fund the activities undertaken by the City Mission continue.

“Wellington’s Longest Lunch will feed 1500 people and will be a unique gastronomic experience,” Father Des said. “We need just over 700 people to come along on the day and support us and it will be the longest lunch in New Zealand’s history.”

“Wellington’s Longest Lunch will draw on the support of Wellington corporates, small businesses and individuals, who, for a price, will become part of one of this great event,” Father Des said.

“A hundred and fifty tables will circle the Westpac Stadium pitch, with hundreds of waiters serving over 4,000 plates of sumptuous food - it’s going to be a food experience like none that has ever been seen in New Zealand before,” Father Des said.

“Our friends at Telecom have once again demonstrated their generosity through their support of this event. As a company which, like the City Mission, has a strong heritage in Wellington and New Zealand as a whole, Telecom jumped at the opportunity to give its support.”

Telecom Chief Executive Theresa Gattung said Telecom was looking forward to being part of Wellington’s Longest Lunch. “The Wellington City Mission is an institution in this city and Wellington’s Longest Lunch is a unique way to celebrate its 100 year anniversary, tell people about the job the Mission does, and raise much-needed funds.”

“As principal sponsor, we will be focussing on developing activities which the whole community can get involved in to support this great cause – so watch this space!” she said.

Wellington’s Longest Lunch will be held at the Westpac Stadium on Friday 8 October 2004. Tables of 10 have already gone on sale, with corporate Wellington being invited to use this event to host and reward their most loyal customers and their staff. Other supporters of the Mission will also be able to enjoy the event and, with their friends, share in the Mission’s celebrations.

Tables can be purchased via the website www.avenues.co.nz/longestlunch .
