Olympic Achievement for John Psathas
Pagan Take Flight
One Million Dollars Heading To Vanuatu
IMNZ would like to congratulate John Psathas and his associates Rattle Records, Trust Records and Promethean Editions for Psathas’ outstanding achievement in being selected to compose the opening music for the 2004 Olympic Games currently being held in Athens. On August 14 Psathas’ composition was broadcast to an audience of around 3 billion people, probably the largest audience a New Zealand musician has ever had. He was chosen from more than 600 international composers to write and arrange 13 pieces of music for the Athens Olympics. Psathas’ debut album ‘Rhythm Spike’ (Rattle) won the Classical Album of the Year award at the 2000 New Zealand Music Awards.
The Pagan and Antenna crew have been running with the jet set. Pagan Records is putting together the official music CD for NZ Fashion Week again this year, and Air NZ have agreed to provide an audio channel exclusive to the release which will feature in October/November In-flight services. Paul Ubana Jones has just returned from playing in Europe, mainly in Spain where he supported Mory Kante and Paco de Lucia before huge audiences. Dub Asylum’s remix 12” is receiving airplay in Thailand, Australia and France.
one million dollars (Sugarlicks) have been invited to play at the Fest’ Napuan music festival in Vanuatu from the 22nd to the 24th of October. The band’s travelling party of 20 people will be making the trip and playing at the festival on the Friday and Saturday nights. While in Vanuatu various members of the group will also be holding workshops for local musicians.
Moana (Tangata) has arrived back from another successful European tour with US bookings in the pipeline.
Looking at forthcoming releases from Pagan, the Warratahs have recorded 4 new songs for their next album with Mike Gibson in Wellington and Fou Nature have just completed recording 2 singles with OMC producer Alan Jansson. Indicator Dogs are mixing down work in progress with Stylus and Blindspott mixer Dave Rhodes. Crumb’s debut album ‘So Dirty, Every Day’ will be released in September 2004. They are playing launch parties with Slavetrader who are not to be messed with...
Misfits of Science (HooF), Adeaze (Dawn Raid) and The Fast Crew (King Music) are still in the top 10 in the national Singles chart.
In other news from King Music, Te Vaka have just returned from a tour of Malaysia. Blackfoot, aka Glenn Compain, has a song on the ‘Niu Sila’ compilation and has a new single called Life’s 4 U, produced by Dominique Leagua from D1 Entertainment.
Arch Hill have released Fang's third album 'Swim Up Stream', and Fang have a brand new website at www.fang.co.nz where you can watch a few videos and also listen to the album on low-fi streamed audio.
Powertool Records has released a new album by Joed Out called 'Weirder Than Looney Tunes' which is available now.
Dougal Records presents an album release party for the Kinka Drum Ensemble, who are playing the traditional rhythms of Ghana alongside Afro-Kiwi band Gahu at Brix Bar, Auckland on September 18. Gahu will also be performing their original compositions in a series of four Thursday evenings at Auckland’s London Bar starting on September 16.
Wordperfect’s album ‘Spellcheck’ is now out via in music. Hailing from Christchurch, he was in the Beats n Pieces crew (with Antsman from Rhombus, Hame from Breaks Co-op and DJ Pause-1 from What Now fame) and has battled to national finals. He founded the Trans Tasman and soon Commonwealth MC battle scene, and placed third in New York’s biggest MC battle ‘The Rock Steady Crew Anniversary: MC Battle’ in 2002. He is also part of King Kapisi’s Overstayer crew. For ‘Spellcheck’, Wordperfect called on the likes of contributors Nat Rose, Tyna Keelan, DJ CXL and a smorgasboard of producers including DJ Logikal, Peter McLennan, Hamish Clark and Chris Macro; with the ever reliable Luke Tomes on recording, mastering and mixing duties.
Maorimusic.com is distributing the compilation album ‘Our Story’ by new label Southgate Entertainment, featuring 17 exciting new acts performing hip hop, r’n’b and reggae tracks, including Rise Up from Johnny K and Jahlyse whose video is getting good TV airplay. Two more albums from the Southgate label are set for release in the coming months. Toni Huata has been selected to perform at the Global Carnival in Australia in October.
Global Routes tell us that El Hula and Lucid 3 are both up for Best Indie Video in the Juice TV awards. Autozamm are on the road nationwide and Subtract are touring the North Island with 8 Foot Sativa in August and September. Alister Riddell is releasing a new Space Waltz album in October, which he will be touring.
After 3 years of living on opposite sides of the planet, the Pitch Black boys have been holed up in a variety of studios in the Coromandel, Piha, Wellington and central Auckland working on their next album ‘Ape To Angel’, to be released on Kog in late September.
The video release party for Onelung's The Royal Loop directed by Richard Hobbs and featuring the amazing puppetry of Oliver Smart will take place at Khuja Lounge in Auckland on September 16th.
Tangata Records are recording new singles by Ruia, Ranea, Awha as well as Morgana Watson and are set to release the new Maori language album by Piripi Christie titled ‘Mo Ake’ in early September.
