RACE BACKGROUND
Nike will stage the ultimate 10km running event in Auckland on Sunday 3 October 2004.
The event is being launched next Wednesday and is based on the international success of Run London, Run LA and Run New York. Run Auckland joins the select circuit of international events and will be known as "You're The Run That I Want".
The 10km run will take place on a unique course and is designed to get more people running – off the couch and on to the track – based on the fact that it is more fun to run with someone else!
‘You’re The Run That I Want’ is a unique running event – it’s fun, it’s social, it offers seven weeks of free training nights, follows a course never before run in any major event and culminates in an incredible party atmosphere at the Race Day finish line.
Top Kiwi sportspeople such as Cameron Brown, Stephen Fleming, Sarah Ulmer and Stacey Jones are supporting the event and encouraging their countrymen off the couch and into running with a friend.
SUPPORTING THE CYSTIC FIBROSIS ASSOCIATION
In addition, "You're The Run That I Want" is supporting the Cystic Fibrosis Association. This week is Cystic Fibrosis awareness week which times in well with the launch of this event and we're hoping to raise as much money as we can for the children suffering Cystic Fibrosis throughout NZ. Every person that commits to run on 3 October will contribute $5 towards the association.
TRAINING RUNS WITH FRIENDS
The key hook for the event that differentiates this from others is that we are holding training runs to help people train and to also meet new people. For most, to run 10km's they'll need to train, so based on the fact that it is more fun to run with someone else we're hosting training sessions each night during the weeks leading up to the event.
The training sessions commence on Monday 16 August, go through until early October and will be held in the following locations:
Monday -
Takapuna - Shoe Science - 6pm - Cam Brown will be down there
running
Tuesday - Queen St, City - Footlocker - 6pm
Wednesday - Victoria Park Market - Platinum - 6pm -
Stacy Jones, Stephen Fleming, the Aitken triplets and Stacy
Daniels will be among the attendees
Thursday - Newmarket
- Shoe Science - 6pm
At the training runs Nike will have specialists that help new runners and give training tips. You can also take out a new pair of runners for a trial run. It’s all about getting people out doing exercise and we all know it is more fun to run with someone else (also, from experience with the Platinum Running Club, it’s great for women – as it’s much safer running with someone else).
INFORMATION
All the information on the race will be available on www.nikerunning.co.nz next week. Currently you can register your interest on the site and we've already had about 1,000 people express interest in the past week.
CYSTIC FIBROSIS BACKGROUND
Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is New Zealand’s most common life threatening genetic condition; it primarily affects the lungs, leading to progressive and irreversible lung damage for which, to date, there is no cure. A person born with CF will have inherited the defective gene from BOTH parents who are usually unknowing, symptomless carriers. One in 25 people in NZ carry the gene that causes CF and most do not know it.
Sadly CF significantly shortens the life of a person born with it, however medical advice is unanimous, people with CF can help preserve their own quality of life, lung function and longevity by physical exercise from an early age. Breath4CF is a grant fund within the Cystic Fibrosis Association of NZ, a registered charity that helps ensure that the cost of participation in life preserving physical activity is not a barrier. Breath4CF provides financial assistance to people with CF towards the cost of sporting equipment, gym memberships, entry fees, sports lessons or assists towards any physical activity that would produce a health benefit.
