Slow Melody Champion to Hit the High Notes in Budapest
The International Tuba & Euphonium Convention will be held in Budapest, Hungary, next week with a brilliant New Zealand Brass Musician and a New Zealand composition playing a major role at the Convention.
New Zealander Riki McDonnell, will play a brand new Concerto by Kenneth Young "Concerto for Euphonium and Orchestra" with the Budapest Symphony Orchestra on 24 July 04. Mr McDonnell is one four invited musicians of international prowess,
The 2003 International Euphonium Player of the Year, Mr McDonnell won the 2004 New Zealand Invitation Slow Melody Competition in Christchurch on Wednesday 7 July 2004. He is the most award winning brass player in the history of brass contesting at District and National levels, and not always on the same brass instrument!
A musical instrument importer, Mr McDonnell is a sought after soloist in New Zealand, Australia and Europe, where his unfailing good humour and consummate musicianship has made him soloist with many brass bands, concert bands and orchestras.
This world premier is the proof that Brass Musicians and Orchestral Musicians coming together make brilliant music that meets in harmony and that listeners of all styles will wish to hear.
Registered with Marlborough District Brass Band, Mr McDonnell was the supreme winning player at the Auckland District Brass Bands Contest a few weeks prior the National Contests in Christchurch.
The composer Mr Young began his musical career with the brass band “Woolston” and moved to orchestral playing following the completion of his music degree. He is now a highly regarded composer and conductor in New Zealand and Australia.
