New Zealand Monopoly Championship To Be Decided

Dice will roll and properties will be sold at Britomart this Sunday (18th July) as the Grande Final of the New Zealand Monopoly Championship 2004 takes place. Four finalists will battle it out for the title of New Zealand Monopoly Champion, with the winner going on to represent New Zealand at the World Monopoly Championship being held in Tokyo in October this year.

Each of the competitors have either won or come second at the North Island or South Island Monopoly Championships, which were held earlier this year.

To find our countries best Monopoly player the finalists will compete in a single 'winner takes all' game, which will last up to 90 minutes in total or until one player wins, whichever occurs first. In the event of the game lasting the full 90 minutes, the player with the highest total asset score will be judged the winner.

Teresa Mitrovic, marketing manager for Hasbro New Zealand Limited, who distributes Monopoly, is sure that the final will make for a captivating game. “Our four competitors are highly skilled at Monopoly. They are very strategic and know how to wipe other players off the board. Our regional games were pretty intense and I am sure that the final will be a very close game, which will definitely be worth coming along to Britomart to see”

The 2004 World Monopoly Championship will bring together Monopoly Champions from more than 40 countries who will play for a $US15,140 grand prize. The prize money is equivalent to the money included in a standard Monopoly set.

The World Monopoly Championship is held every four years in a different city around the world. The championship has been going since 1973 when it was held in New York. Since then the games have been held in many major cities including Monte Carlo, Berlin and London.
