The selection for Homegrown is finally over - and we've got some great films on offer - so get hold of your film fest programmes and book your tickets. We're also pleased to be involved in the Games and Girls Symposia, the first of its kind in this part of the world, should be a great event. 1) HOMEGROWN : Premiere NZ Short Film at the NZ Film Festivals

Three programmes of Kiwi short films will début at the Telecom 36th Auckland International Film Festival 2004 as part of MIC's short film Homegrown compilations. We received more than 150 entries, a record we think, and more than 130 of these submissions were on digital video. Thanks to everyone who submitted their films! Thanks also to AAV, BFM and the selectors of the programmes, SImon Raby and Leanne Saunders.

This year we've got three collections: Works on Film, Works on Video and The Documentary. This year represents the first time we've been able to present documentary and it reflects strong overall submissions in that genre.

Five of the premiere short films have been selected in 'A List' International Film Festivals.

€ 'Closer' was part of the Official Selection at the Cannes Film Festival 2004. Directed by David Rittey € 'Tiga e le lloa / Hidden Pain', from Samoan-NZ filmmaker Popo Lilo, screened at the Sundance Film Festival in January and will screen at Montreal World Film Festival in August € 'Fleeting Beauty', directed by Virginia Pitts, will screen at this year¹s Montreal World Film Festival and the Valladolid International Film Festival in October € 'My Father¹s Shoes', from Samantha Scott, has been accepted into the Melbourne International Film Festival and Montreal World Film Festival € 'Boy', directed by Welby Ings, will also screen at the Montreal World Film Festival

Once more we're planning a nationwide tour of these programmes, starting with the Auckland festival which opens July 9th. Homegrown travels throughout the country, programmes may vary from city to city. Check www.mic.org.nz, or www.nzff.telecom.co.nz for full details.

3) FUTURE AUDIO MEETING

As you may know, MIC was approached by Bluewater Consortium to move into a new expanded venue in the Britomart precinct, in the first level of the CPO. With its planned re-launch in early 2005, the MIC will be able to address new media, audio, live multimedia and screen-based projects in a much more extensive manner.

As part of this development, MIC is developing strategies to support the development and profile of audio work, including:

* programming * dedicated and project spaces for audio work * production suites * technical issues around installation and live audio-visual projects

Those who are interested in new audio projects are invited to attend.

4) 3RD RIVER CITY FILM FESTIVAL WANGANUI 3-4 SEPTEMBER 2004 REMINDER TO COMPETITION ENTRANTS & FESTIVAL DETAILS The closing dates for entries for all competitions is fast approaching! NZ Short Films - 7 min max* including credits - August 6 Te Reo Short Films - 15 min max - August 20 Maori TV Station Breaks - 5 min max - August 20 Junior Shorts from NZ High Schools - 4 min max* - August 16 * up to 10% over will be accepted but absolutely no more! FESTIVAL 2004 The Royal Wanganui Opera House is the venue for the Saturday September 4 screenings, giving your films a bigger public audience. Because participants in the competitions will receive free entry to the social functions, complimentary tickets to the screenings will not be issued, but be assured that entry prices won't break the bank, and student rates will apply. Please note that there are no postal bookings this year - all tickets to screenings will be issued by the Opera House booking office on the day, although locals will be able to pre-purchase tickets from August 23. We will reserve seats to accommodate out-of-towners. The 'Meet & Greet' will be held on the Friday evening, September 3, from 6-8 pm. Snacks and drinks will be provided, with a chance to view films from Festival 2003 and some new films from past entrants. The 'Awards Presentation Ceremony' will be held on Saturday evening, September 4, from 7-10 pm. A great occasion to dress up and share the excitement. Substantial finger food, wine and soft drinks are included. Both events will be held at the Wanganui Commercial Club, a stately heritage building opposite the Royal Wanganui Opera House. Complimentary tickets for these social events are available to all competition entrants attending the Festival. If you don't have a film in this year but would still like to attend these two social events, special tickets will be issued to you - $5 'Meet & Greet' and $10 'Awards Ceremony' - payable at the door on the night. All tickets, both complimentary and/or 'to pay', must be ordered by August 27, and will be posted to you. No tickets will be issued after the 27th unless there are exceptional circumstances. Please e-mail filmwanganui@xtra.co.nz with the subject 'Tickets'. Give the name of the film entered, all the names of who will be attending each event, and give a postal address (most important!) Others who don't come into the complimentary category, just send names of those attending each event and mark 'to pay', and a postal address of course. Wanganui is currently playing host to the production company Silverscreen, and the stars of 'River Queen', a feature film being shot in the district. The town is all abuzz with film excitement, and the River City Film Festival will be the icing on the cake. 5) MASTERCLASS! SHORT FILMMAKING WORKSHOP

The Masterclass! Short Filmmaking Workshop to be held in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch from the 9-18 July 2004. This is a great opportunity for emerging writers, directors, producers and key creatives to explore aspects of short filmmaking craft and gain a wider appreciation of the international filmmaking environment.

The focus of the workshops will be on taking short film scripts from concept to screen and beyond, meaning it will be especially relevant for anyone thinking about making a short film, currently studying or making short films.

The sessions will be led by Simon van der Borgh of the UK First Film Foundation and Kim Adelman, US based author of the book THE ULTIMATE FILMMAKER'S GUIDE TO SHORT FILMS-Making it BIG in Shorts. Simon and Kim's sessions will be complemented by presentations from NZ filmmakers and industry bodies.

Masterclass! is a joint initiative of Montana Wines, The British Council NZ and Fulbright New Zealand.

6) SCREEN INNOVATION PRODUCTION FUND ANNOUNCES GRANTS

7) SIPF ANIMATOR'S NETWORKING PROJECT

The Screen Innovation Production Fund is instigating a database for filmmakers working in animation. The purpose of the database is to create an opportunity for animator's to network with peers, exchange ideas and experiences, especially around the use of new and ever-changing technologies and to see each other's work.
