Launch of Japanese news on weekday television

Triangle Television is to screen the English news programme 'Newsline' which is broadcast overseas daily by the Japanese public broadcasting channel NHK.

NHK's 'Newsline' is designed to give viewers full and detailed coverage of fast-changing developments in Japan and around the world. From Thursday July 1 it will be broadcast by Triangle Television on weekdays from 4.50pm to 5.00pm.

NHK, Japan's sole public television channel, is independent from government or private ownership and gives priority to the opinions of viewers and listeners.

NHK has 54 stations in Japan and 35 correspondents located around the world. It promotes intercultural dialogue and, due to its extensive network, offers fast and accurate reports covering both international and local news.

Triangle Television Chief Executive Officer Jim Blackman says: "We are delighted to be offering the Japanese news to our viewers. It fits perfectly with our commitment to provide Aucklanders with an eclectic mix of programmes that appeal to Auckland's diverse communities and adds to the growing range of international news programmes that we screen with information from around the world."

Triangle Television is Auckland's only regional, non-commercial television station and has operated as a public broadcaster to Greater Auckland since August 1 1998. The channel screens a mix of regional-access television with international news and information programmes. It is non-profit making and operates with no funding from NZ on Air. Triangle broadcasts 24 hours daily from UHF channel 41.
