Announcing Kurz und Klein (Short and Small), highlights from the legendary German Oberhausen Film Festival - a collaborative project the Moving Image Centre, the Film Archive, The Physics Room and the Goethe Institut - it promises to be a feast for the eyes and ears.

Homegrown entries have closed, so thanks to all who contributed to the massive stack of films on our shelves (130+ entries!)- we'll be making some announcements shortly, so stay tuned.

KURZ UND KLEIN : SHORT AND SMALL Highlights from the Oberhausen International Short Film Festival

Oberhausen's International Short Film Festival, in its 50th anniversary this year, is one of the oldest and most renowned film festivals in the world. Festival Director, Lars Henrik Gass, is touring New Zealand with a series of programmes celebrating the world of the short film.

INTERNATIONAL VIDEO PROGRAMME

Entry by Koha ­ limited seating Saturday 29th May 6.30pm, as part of The Easy Listening Series Auckland Art Gallery Auditorium (cnr Kitchener Wellesley St)

This is without doubt the most political and experimental program of the series. Gunilla Josephson destroys the image of her (imaginary?) father Ingmar Bergman. Miranda July presents a confusing portrait of society on the brink of a catastrophe. Claudia Aravena thematizes September 11 against the background of the military putsch in Chile a good 30 years before.

All these works question the authenticity of the images and the perspective of the narrative.

Was Souheil Bachar actually a hostage in Lebanon? Was the female narrator of "Cargo" actually locked up with sailors on a ship for weeks on end? What images are valid where reality does not seem to make sense?

EASTERN EUROPE FILM PROGRAMME

This program includes several of the most important films from the Socialist countries of Eastern Europe.

"These films are not narrative films in the strictest sense of the word but primarily animations and documentaries. Zilnik depicts not only the deplorable situation in former Yugoslavia but also the eye that depicts it. Godina, who at times works as Godard's assistant, portrays various sections of the population and the system which attempts to hold them together. The technique used by Rybzynski for his "Tango" won him an Oscar, and the Academy did not hesitate to award one to Svankmajer either. The background is the impending collapse of the Soviet Union and the vacuum that ensues."

HISTORICAL OVERVIEW - INTERNATIONAL FILM Historical Overview- International Film

Far removed from the undemanding uniformity which meanwhile pervades mainstream feature films, the international competition program offers a wide diversity of genres and innovations. Among these contributions from six countries are humorous films that make us laugh, distressing films that make us pensive, animated cartoon films for every taste and documentaries thematizing the gender relationships, violence and growing up. Although many of the films manage completely without language, they do in fact communicate with each other and in the end you cannot fail to notice the thread that runs through them all. We invite you to take this long and exciting voyage of discovery through the great cinema of short films.

CALL FOR ENTRIES >> FLEET FM DRIVE-IN SCREENING

Kia-ora,

Fleet Fm is presenting a drive-in screening event. From their cars the audience will tune in to Fleet FM 88.3 and listen to the audio for the on-screen images. We are looking for artists to submit short films, music videos, animations, archive footage, oddities, video performances and experimental works. Special attention is intended for, but not limited to, works with a strong audio or music focus. We are seeking International and local New Zealand artists.

The proposed venue for the drive-in screenings is aloft the water reservoir at the top of Khyber pass. The site looks out upon volcanic Mt Eden, an expansive city scape, and the western Waitakere ranges. We will feature a continous mix of diverse material. Strung together and presented in radio program fashion. There will be different programmes for two nights. Live Audio Visual performances are planned. And roller-disco performers will provide refreshments.

Fleet is a Low Power radio station at the far left gaurdband of the FM frequency. Consisting of a non commercial, non profit community of about 70 passionate volunteers. Fleet gives it's contributors license to express their own unique interests, making it stand out from commercial radio's restrictive format. Bringing variety to the airwaves since July 18, 2003.

OPPORTUNITY: EXPERIMENTAL INTERDISCIPLINARY COLLABORATION I'm a Year 3 Performing Arts student in the Contemporary Dance Course at UNITEC and I'm looking for a digital media artist who is interested in collaborating with me in an interdisciplinary performance project as part of my course. The performance times will be the 4 evenings of Wed 16 to Sat 19 June. You would need to be available at the performance to operate a camera, manipulate images, and conduct live projection and also to work with me on a part-time basis leading up to the perfomance time. As this is a student project this is not paid work but there is a limited budget to cover costs, so it would suit a creative innovative artist who is keen to experiment with interfacing digital media with live performance / performance art / conceptual art / structured improvisation. 48HOURS - REGISTRATION BEGINS

48HOURS is an intense filmmaking event. Cowards need not apply. This is NZ's premiere short film competition. Teams have just one weekend to write, shoot, edit and survive the completion of an entire short film!

Last year hip hop star Scribe rapped and danced his way through a musical western. Last year Charlotte Dawson flashed her boobs to foil her kidnappers. Last year a competitor broke bones during a motorcycle stunt. Last year professionals went head to head with amateurs. Last year every single screening sold out.

This year there will be more teams. This year the stakes are higher. This year there's a TV special in the works. This year hundreds of people will take to the streets on June 11th for some creative chaos. Some will do it for the sheer fun of seeing their hard work shown to an enthusiastic crowd, some will do it for the chance to win international travel, cash prizes, GX30 mobile phones, Apple eMacs, writing workshops, directing workshops, Apple editing software, a dvd of the best of AK & WGTN, set visits and much, much more.

VIDEODANCE2004: CALL FOR ENTRIES

VideoDance started five years ago as an international dance film festival, and soon it widened up to include more kinds of experiment on movement and the moving image.

Celebrating this year its 5th edition, it welcomes your entries on dance films, experimental film using movement as its main material, video-installations and live improvisation on image and sound.

About VideoDance

VideoDance is a film exhibition, presenting a showcase of the latest experiments on film and movement. It is focused on the special relationship between movement and the moving image, both when it is produced as a result of a choreography for the camera, and when it is produced by the filmmaker's look on the movement. Films are presented in thematic programmes. There are also sections presenting archival material on dance and film history, contemporary evolutions on movement and dance, video-installations, live media improvisation on image and sound. The festival takes place in Athens, in mid-September. The film programme is screened afterwards in Thessaloniki.

The festival is non-competitive and non-commercial.

Your submissions are welcome!

You may submit any kind of dance film (fiction, stage-studio recording, camera re-work, documentary, choreography for the camera etc.), but also any experimental film based on the relationship between movement and moving image, produced between 2001 and 2004. You may also submit video installations based on body and movement and samples of live media improvisation on image and electronic music.

The deadline for submissions is May the 31st (31/5/2004).

Monument Recall is an exhibition of work by artists who are challenging ideas of 'monument.' Through media, visual and audio design, subject matter, and concept, the works in this exhibition reframe and challenge conventions and traditions of public monuments in public spaces. Short films, videos, and digital works, no longer than 15 minutes in length will be considered, and should be postmarked by July 31, 2004.

The AEAF Short Film Festival will take place from 7:00pm on Tuesday 1 June at the Melbourne Convention Centre and will showcase the best short films from Australia and around the world that show a degree of innovation and mastery of computer-animation and use of special effects.

However, to be considered, all films must contain a large amount of computer-generated imagery, and be no longer than 15 minutes. Please indicate the duration of your film. To enter a submission is free, but there will be no royalties paid for screening.

Please be aware that films submitted to the AEAF Short Film Festival are not for competition judging. The screening offers an opportunity to have your film shown to the AEAF audience in a theatre atmosphere. The AEAF Short Film Festival will also be covered in the June issue Digital Media World Magazine.
