TUHONO - Frequently Asked Questions
More than 353,000 voters of
Maori descent were sent a Tuhono affiliation And
consent
form in the post at the beginning of last week and are now
being urged to sign and date it, identify their iwi and send
it back before the end of this month (May).
Tuhono - set up by Maori for Maori - will pass on the contact details And iwi affiliations of consenting individuals to iwi and other Maori organisations they specify on the affiliation and consent form.
They include Maori trust boards, organisations recognised by Te Ohu Kai Moana - the Treaty of Waitangi Fisheries Commission for the purposes of Maori fisheries allocation, and organisations recognised by the Crown for treaty settlements.
Below are some of the most frequently asked questions in relation to the Tuhono affiliation and consent form.
Q: I'm already registered with my iwi?
A: You should still send back your Tuhono form for a number of reasons: the information will be centrally managed and updated through the electoral system; costs for each iwi will be minimised as a central database is maintained on their behalf; and the systems provided by the Maori affiliation service, Tuhono, are robust and secure.
Q: My iwi is not on the Tuhono form?
A: Write the name of your iwi on the bottom right hand corner or on the reverse of the form, sign and date it, and send it back.
Q: I do not know my iwi?
A: Then tick the box - 'I don't know my iwi' - sign and date it, and send it back.
Q: Can I affiliate to more than one iwi?
A: Yes. For the purposes of Tuhono, you can affiliate to all the iwi you belong to. It will be for those respective iwi to verify your information.
Q: I know my iwi but I don't know the organisation that represents my iwi?
A: Identify your iwi. It is optional to specify any organisation that represents your iwi.
Q: I haven't received a Tuhono affiliation and consent form?
A: That means you are not registered on the
electoral roll, your contact details may be incorrect and
need to be updated, or when you enrolled, you didn't
indicate you were of Maori descent. To enrol or check if
your enrolment details are correct, visit
www.elections.org.nz
