BrewNZ - Celebrating great beer and fine food
Book your diary to make sure you don’t miss the annual BrewNZ celebration in Wellington during Queen’s Birthday week (2-6 June). BrewNZ is the only national event that celebrates the ancient craft of brewing as well as bringing together New Zealand’s top brewers, for a wonderful long weekend of great food, beer tasting and fun.
BrewNZ focuses on our best breweries from the biggest to the smallest. Their beers have names like Swine Lager (a special edition manuka beer), Gisborne Gold, (reputed to have a cult following in Wellington) Black Magic (described as a malt black beer, ruby to black in colour, with coffee and vanilla aroma, and espresso palate with praline finish), the list goes on. A Wicked Blond lager may be more to your taste or Chocolate Stout now the weather has turned cooler.
Kerry Tyack, beer and food expert and Director of BrewNZ, says as well as the more familiar ale and lager brands there will be around 12 Festive Brews to be tasted. These are unique beers specially brewed for BrewNZ 2004.
Nearly 25 Wellington restaurants, bars and cafes have teamed up with individual brewers to offer a progressive tasting around the city, with each establishment matching wonderful beers with fine food.
This year New World Supermarkets in the lower North Island have joined BrewNZ to offer in-store tasting of a variety of beers matched with food that best compliments the brew and brings out its flavours.
Members of the public can meet the brewers and taste the award winning beers amongst many others from around the country and the world at the Great New Zealand Beer Show, which is held at the Boat Shed, Taranaki Warf on 4-5 June. Also on offer are tutored tastings for those wanting to learn more about beer. In addition there is the option of a trying specially designed beer and food menus at one of the many restaurants, bars and cafes around Wellington participating in BrewNZ.
Get yourself to Wellington and start your journey of discovery around the bars, restaurants and cafes, meeting the brewers, tasting the beer and experiencing the fascinating marriage of great beer and fine food.
